ok, y'all know that we've had a couple of losses recently ... well, now our hamster, Scooter, is ill

and damn PETSMART to hell!! k, i phoned them yesterday to say that something's really wrong & do they treat hamsters ... they SELL 'em all day long, right? ... "oh yeah, our vet treats hamsters" it never occurred to me that my avian vet might also treat pocket pets ... just me? soooooo, we lost another day in this little guy's life, took him to the PetSmart vet at 3:45 today & she FINALLY comes in & sez "well, i don't specialize in 'pocket pets' but i'll refer you to ... Dr. **** in Savannah" ... MY AVIAN VET WHO I ABSOLUTELY TRUST & ADORE!! by the time we got home, it wuz too late to get Scooter in, so we got an emergency appt. at 10:30am tomorrow ... anyway, his belly's all bloated & he hasn't been going potty ... neither "number" ... we give him fresh iceberg lettuce & fresh fruit daily so "just constipated" should not be at issue here ... altho he wuz VERY ... i gave him some olive oil several times & some timothy hay ... well, he can't even get down his tube now from his loft to the lower cage where is water bottle is ... we're having to hold his bottle & let him drink his fill ... i've put a couple of strawberries up in his bed & a block of timothy hay ... sheeeeeesh, i feel so badly for him ... he's such a love-bug ... we noticed this afternoon some bruising around his hind legs ... this non-specialized vet sez ... kidney? liver? CANCER? ... OMG!! i just feel like crap!! i mean, i realize that hamsters don't live long lives, but i hate that he's suffering because of me!!

if ONLY i had phoned the vet in Savannah first ... you'd just think that in a community like this (touristy, but lots of retired folk & transplants), there'd be a specialized veterinarian ... i mean, peeples around here have ALL KINDS OF PETS!! k, now ... *** deep, cleansing breath ***
i'm done ... for now!!
i luv y'all ... y'all let me have fits & stuff!
huggles,
Wren

When a pet is sick or dies you're entitled to
"fits and stuff". Fit away and here's a hug.
Hope he makes it.

well, we've just returned from the vet with Scooter ... we had to have him euthanized

... doc xrayed him & he had a tumour taking up most of one side of his little tummy, which wuz pushing his intestines over to the other side (constipation) & smooshing his bladder so badly that we couldn't even see it (no tinkles) ... his spirits were still good & i wuz up during the night with him, feeding & handling & drinking, but he wuz just getting more lame & doc said it wuz inevitable ... probably just hafta have it done in 2 or 3 more days ... we'll miss him so much ... man, i love these rescues & it does my heart so good to see them thrive, but the losses are just so painful
luv,
Wren

Oh Wren,
I'm so, so, so sorry for your loss. What a cutie pie he was. But bless your heart for having him put to sleep. A lot of people wouldn't have forked out the $ to have that done for a hamster. You know? You have a good heart and you come into these animals lives and give them the best! Wish I was closer cuz I'd give you a great big hug to say thanks!
Hugs,
Jen

My oldest son was REALLY getting into birds so to start, he got a budgie from there. Turned him totally off. (sensitive for a boy)
Dead before the next sunrise. Needless to say, I take Baby everywhere EXCEPT the pet store.

i really feel for you having to do that, last month i went to my mums house and decided to take tiffany out the back to see pugsley (brothers pug dog)he didnt come running up like he normally would and i had to go looking for him, when i found him he wasnt moving just sitting really still.straight away i rang the vet and took him in,it turns out he had meningitis and his brain was pretty badly infected my brother was really upset so i had to give the vet permission to put to sleep. just writting about it is upsetting.and especially having to tell a 3yr old that pugsley isnt coming home. i hope you dont have to do that again for a very long time.

Good days and bad... if my Baby passes ya'll will have to come get me out of bed.
I wish I was joking but I dont think I could handle that. I have let myself love and I dont like it.
Always know you can vent here... about anything. We are true friends here. We feel connected and as if we have all met because we have all been through hell together.
I encourage sharing, even if just to vent. Many were against this type of forum to release but they are now gone because I wasnt willing to make the board:
ALL ABOUT BIRDS AND NOTHING ELSE. And well, they werent mature enough to handle idle chat so it got ugly for a bit. I cant make everyone happy though so I did with the board what made *me* happpy. I created a forum for people to talk about birds, kids, cats, husbands, anything goes.
And with these follies, we get closer. With each laugh we get tighter and with each hug we love a little more. I didnt and wouldnt change that about the board for anything in this world.
I dont care if we have only 3 good members. Rather have that than 150 pain in the asses.
Its about quality on this board... not quantity.
We love you. Just know that. And nothing is too sacred to be shared. I have shared more than you can imagine. And unlike any other board... IT WONT COME BACK TO HAUNT YOU.

It's better we have place to come and chat than try to do it in the other 'bird' topic areas. If you don't want to read about our lives...our trials...anything other than birds...don't open the topic
Thanks for this area so we can get closer Mik...
Much Love
