New IRN very territorial

Post by skippie1 »

Hi,

My wife and I got Magoo, a blue IRN about a week ago and he has started to bite out at any hand coming close to the lower portion of his cage. He steps up just fine from the perches in the upper section of his cage and he is a sweet bird when out of the cage, but my wife is concerned that his biting may escalate.

Any tips or hints that might stop this behavior?

Thanx,

Skippie

I recently adopted a Irn and have had my Dude as well since birth, with the bird who is territorial you must not show you are fearful of him or else that is giving the the power. YEs I am saying you are going to have to take a couple of bites and yes you probably will bleed, but that is going to be the case with any hookbil bird. Also talk to the bird tell him what you are going to do in a soothing voice it may help. I am also fearful that your bird will let this behavior escalade, so get it while it is small!

Hi again,

It now seems that when in the cage, Magoo lunges at fingers placed next to the cage, but he doesn't bite, he just taps them with his beak! My wife and I decided to avoid flinching and show no reaction when he does this and it seems to be paying off! In the meantime, we got him a carrier and have started taking him for outings to our neighbor and the breeder we got him from. He certainly seems to enjoy the outings and they help with his socialization.

*sighs* well IRNs are know for being VERY terratorial and sadly there really isn't much we can do. His cage is his home and he feels he has to defend it. Any one have any ideas? See I own a 'puppy god' of an IRN so with Prinny its different

is it any particular time of the day/night that magoo does this.i know indie does the lunges at us early in the morning as we walk past his cage he is really not a morning bird.all i can suggest is to try to ignore it and keep doing what you were trying to do in the first place and he should get the idea that it doesnt work and get sick of doing it.

Good idea with the carrier. Prinny loves to go out for a walk with me and she has her own carrier. She enjoys hearing and screaming at the local birds. Just don't let them out lol
