Hello ... I am a new member . I currently have a Parrolet and am considering getting a IRN .. there is a bird store here locally and she has been around for about 20 years or so. Im confident she knows what she is doing / talking about when it comes to birds ... My sister in law bought a Grey from her and has had no problems . My first question (for anyone who reads this and wants to answer ) is this .... the lady at the bird shop said female IRN's were awful birds when they sexually matured and were mean .... is this true ? Im sure it is for some birds , cause they all have different personalties , etc . And she said they were screamers ... I've read some post on here already and it seems to be half and half on the screaming part .. some say they do and some say they don't .. is there any particular reason for the screaming ? I mean the ones who scream , is it because there not getting enough attention or wanting something , etc or are they JUST screamers ??? Im wanting a bird that is bigger than my parrolet but not as big as a Grey ... I do realize IRN's have long tail feathers , but Im talking about the bird itself , so after some research I feel an IRN would be a great bird . I will be going to the bird shop about once a week or every other week to hand feed my baby bird (once the eggs hatch) and will be able to take him/her home after 8-12 weeks ... so im excited that im able to visit and hand feed my baby bird ... most places just sale a weaned bird and don't let you take part in the first baby stages .

I dunno about the whole mature thing but most female IRNs that been handled right by their owners are just fine. I think we're gonna have to get Athena to answer this one...

hello and welcome.im not too sure about the moody female thing (sounds familiar doesnt it ) i have a tame irn boy and he gets moody sometimes and other times we cant get away from him.Now that i think about it its like kids,they are all sweet and innocent till they get older then think they dont need us anymore,until they realise they do actually need us.I would go for it,they are really good birds to own.I think all birds have the potential to be screamers so it may just be a chance we have to take,to some people its more annoying and others dont think its that bad.

Welcome aboard! I commend you for doing research before acquiring your ringneck.

About females making lousy pets—it’s not true. Female ringnecks are labeled as bad companions due to their bluffing stage. Females tend to be a bit rougher and naughtier. They quickly learn who is in charge IF biting is ignored and handling resumes. All ringnecks must be handled daily for the first year if you are expecting a great pet.

Once a female ringneck passes through this stage, they can be very affectionate, as a matter of fact, the very presence of you inside the room will cause her to cluck and tilt her head back—this is good;)
