Hi
Tomorrow I am getting my new handfed irn at home. he/she is 5 weeks old and has just stopped eating formula. My question is how often and for how long can I start having him out of the cage (so he doesnt get spoiled)? Thank uuuuu
Everyday! When they are young DO NOT leave them for more than a day or so in their cage. These birds will revert so fast to not being sweet or tame. Once they hit their 1 year mark then it is ok to try to leave them in for more than a day but I never have. Prinny gets let out every morning and evening when I get home. She is spoiled but not a bad spoiled. She is well taken care of and well adjusted (I hope so )
Don't just get the bird and expect it to stay tame without your work and effort into the relationship!
Normally, 5-week old IRNs aren't weaned yet and should still be on at least 3 times per day formula feeding.
I would be concerned if your IRN is being undernourished. One of my baby IRNs sometimes refuses to take in formula but I force it to take in the formula. He's 7 weeks old now, 2x a day feeding and starting to eat brocolli blossoms and budgie seeds.
Hia and thanx,
I got him home and actually he is very active in his cage when he sees me close to the cage. Something like wanting to open the cage and take him on me. I actually make food for him while he is on my shoulder. He is still a bit scared while stepping around. If I offer my hand and not my fingers he steps up and tries to climb on my shoulder. In the weekend while i was at home I was taking him out of the cage about 3 times a day for 20 mins each. Now that I am working in the weekdays i will take him in the afternoon to make food with him and put him back again to eat. Then I will take him later in the afternoon for some playing.
What do u think?
And something else. Shall I cover him in the eveining?
