Many questions on my 1st ringneck

Post by dionne »

Hello,
I bought my first ringneck about 3 weeks ago. Well, actually she(?) found me. Her name is Summa Lee. At a pet store she had been dropped off or given up for adoption by her parents. The parents had just had a baby and said that Summa Lee was waking up the baby. Anyway, she was brought to the store the same day I came in and was looking. I was immediatley attracted to her. Pinned eyes and all! The store told me that she was not for sale and didn't know how much or when they would sale her.
I ended up buying a Golden Cap conure "JOJack" that day. He was a baby and was not ready to be brought home yet. In the mean time I would go in and visit. One day the girl I was dealing with said, Summa Lee is for sale; she can go today. Considering I had already bought JoJack. Which my husband did not have a clue about. I had to act like I was thinking it over. Although, I knew I would not leave her there. This pet store is known for the babies. I could not see anyone wanting her. Needless to say, she now mine!
I have not had her long at all. But, I wuv her! The only thing that concerns me is that I do know much about her. The pet store told me that her previous owners said that she was about a year and a half and could talk. The store would not give me or did not have the name or number of the previous owners for me to contact. She does have an ID band. Is there anyway to reseach her ID band number?
Also, she makes a sound I am not sure of. She is a shoulder bird, she doesn't seem to like the hand. She does step up on the forearm and then runs straight for the shoulder! While she is up on my shoulder and I am talking to her, she makes a cooing, kind of laughing, kind of cat purring sound. Does anyone know what this means? Then sometimes she acts as though shes biting my finger but makes a vibrating motion while my finger is in her mouth? She doesn't bite me. However, she will try to push me away with her beak. She has bitten other people in the house.
Also, she will walk behind my head from shoulder to shoulder all puffed out and rubbing her head or beak on me. Is this some kind of mating gester? Plus, the pet store said that she was about 1 1/2 years old. I there anyway to tell her age? PLus, Plus is it possible she could be a he since she's thought to be only a 1 1/2 years and may have not gotten her/his black ring yet?
I am sorry this is so long....I just want to make sure she is happy and that I am doing what is best for her. Thanks for anyones help.

Welcome to u and ur 2 new babys. Well done u for taking on an older IRN. Summa Lee sounds as if she is tame which is gr8 news. I cant give u any advice regarding the behaviour u are talking about. I can however tell u that if Summa lee is a boy then his ring wontshow apperently until he is 2 years old, so u wont have too much time too wait.
You must post some pics of ur baby for us to see, thats if u are able to.Anyway sit tight someone will be along soon who can help u more with the behaviour side of things. Natalie xxxx :)

:D Thanks so much Natalie... I didn't mention JoJack too much because I am not too worried about him. He acts like a puppy! If he wants attention, he takes it.

well Your bird seems very nice and Ms. Lee seems to have picked you as her chosen person. If you post a pick of your new Wuv from a side view i can give you a pretty accurate guess if it is a boy or girl as can the others. But I do have a male and female and there is quite a few differences between the two even as addolecents, you just have to take the time to look and have something to compare it too. Also something to take note, I know she loves you) but since the bird is ur new Fid ( feathered kid) you must show your dominance, letting the bird go on ur shoulder at first is usually not a good idea. This tends to let the bird think that you are not the boss. Other things that help are putting ur perches above the food dishes or paralell to the dish and also not placing the cage where you have to look up to the bird. The best way to stop the bird from going on your shoulder is to just simply put your hand in the way. Also a good thing to gain trust of your wuv is to buy a perch for the shower, this seems to mellow them out, granted they like water. Post pics soon photobucket is a good free way

My chook turned 2 in September and had his full black ring by December - although he started with one black feather under his beak (like a moustache) when he was about 20 months old and then got a couple of orange ones here and there around the back of his head around 21 - 22 months.

Congratulations on your baby!!
