Has anyone ever been to a bird show?

I'm going to my first one on April 22nd and then one in May.

I'm trying to find 3 male lovies. Is this a good place to find them.

What should I expect at the bird shows?

Yup I have...the one I went to was a huge room filled with nothing but bird people. It was awesome but so not good for me to go to. I saw so many that I just wanted to take home...*sighs* can't afford that!

I always go broke, no cash, no checks, no debit cards. Enough for food and drinks. I have to. I also take either my eldist son or my man in case I try the ol 'I dont have the money on me... whats your number?'.

They are my intervention. They pull me out of the shop explaining my obsession to the owner. hehe

Before you go, you should read this:

http://avianweb.com/BirdMartDangers.htm

Its an important thing to know, before you head off to a mart. Some are worse than others, but all of them have potential for serious germs floating around.

I HIGHLY recommend getting a bottle of pet focus (it kills a LOT Of germs) and spraying the crud out of yourself and anything you bring back (excluding birds , they cannot be sprayed) before getting anywhere near your birds. Birds should be properly quarantined, and you should be strident about testing them and keeping Q until you are 100% sure it is safe.

We go, because you cant buy a cage anywhere else for the same price you can at a show, but we end up naked at the front door, dripping with Pet Focus and head for the shower from there.

Yep I will be heading to two this year. The breeder I met down the end of my street (some will remember the ekkie pic I posted) goes to them and is going to take my girlfriend and I next time. He knows the good and bad of most breeders that attend, its nice to have a heads up there.

Just remember, any backyard joe can go to these things. Look alot !! Talk alot!!! ask alot!!

And yes, after handling any other birds its best to do the strip & wash before you go near your own babies. After living on these boards and learning so much from everyone, I do it. even after trips to pet stores or local feed barns (one ounce of prevention .. you know the saying  ).

Hoping to go 2 one next Sunday. Won't be buying, got my eye on a sunnie. Just want to look. Where do people get their cages from? Good quality seems to cost $300 - $400+ Oz dollars. I will need another one for when I get no.2 birdie later this year.

Theres a bird show in New Albany, Indiana on April 22nd then on in Paduca, KY in May 6th and 7th.

If I find any birds I will be sure to quarantine them, I dont want anything to happen to the rest of my flock.

I think I will make everyone strip in the garage lol then throw the clothes on the washer on the way into the house then off to the showers. lol

I can just see the looks on their faces when I tell them.

I really like the bird shows. I've been to, two shows. Actually, that is where I bought Jacques' (my blue IRN). I never see to many IRN at the shows and once someone at the show told me that they are "junk yard birds". Of course, that did not go over too well with me when I love my little baby so.....much. Go and have a good time!!! Michelle

What the heck did he mean by "junk yard birds????" That's not cool. So poo on him.

I have no idea what that means. I guess she was trying to imply that you can't tame them or something. Jacques is very tame. He kisses, shakes, turns and retrieves. He is very attached to me. People blow me away with their class. Here you know someone owns and loves their bird, but you make a comment like that. I'm learning to just ignore ignorance.

Good for you Michelle! Of course you probably spend most of your time ignoring most of humanity! Tee hee!!!! At least in my opinion most of 'em can be rather ignorant and class-less! Anyway, poo on her for that stupid comment!

Jen

I went to a bird sale on Sunday. Lotsa IRNs. Very pretty, top end stuff. Speaking to a finch breeder today he said that we have another 6 in the next 6weeks scattered throughout SA. Great for info from the breeders and to make contacts.

Elaine, here's a link that has a list of bird shows in Victoria, when and where they are. Hope this helps.
