I think doing this with some jute or cotton would be a cheap and fun climb for the birds... what do you think?

I think should be careful to use something that won't snag and trap toenails.

Ideal! Is it certain there cannot be any shifting that would cause a noose effect? Like if his weight pulled one part of the knit out of line, would the cord shorten in another place?
