A question about biting!

Now i know there are a lot of posts on here about biting, however none really seem to be what i'm after.
My bird is only new to family, and he seems to be a little hand shy. He is fine to step up onto it, and take treats out of it and even fly to it, however when i move my hands at all he starts to make almost growling noises and can bite my fingers really hard.
He makes the same noise when i take away inappropriate 'toys' he has found.
Does anyone know what i should do when he bites me? I know not to react by yelling or hitting, but i just don't know what to do!! :?:
How do i correct this behavior? He is a little like those dangerous dogs (i forget what they are called) once he latches on he just holds on for dear life!! My skin is so sore and cut up, please help me! I know it will take time and probably a lot more bloodshed. :(
Oh and i forgot to mention above that he is around 12 weeks old.

Hi there,

I just started a thread on biting that may be helpful for you. http://www.indianringneck.com/forum/vie ... f=2&t=1813

Even with young birds it does take time to build trust between you, so just relax and read up on behaviour and training while he adjusts.

I have found swapping a treat for toy that my bird shouldn't be playing with works well. I would offer him a treat from my palm and he would drop my car keys/money/whatever into my palm to take the treat. I also added the vocal cue "ta". Now I can hold out the hand and say ta and he will run over to give it to me. I still reward him for this, but the treat isn't held where he can see it now.

Regards,
Claire
