Hey Ya'll:

Baby is turning a year old and it looks as though she needs her beak trimmed.

I'll say 'he' when we see the ring but Im convinced.

Can someone explain this procedure?

Can you post a pic Mik? I wouldnt get it done unless its really urgent because once you trim it they grow super fast and will always need it done.

I know the answer is yes but does baby have lots of wood chew toys and stuff? Natural wood perches? Those will help to keep his beak trim.

It is really simple But...

I do it alone. But first Bebe and I visited the local vet for a well bird visit and asked him to show me how. It is easy. He had a helper and used a towel. Bebe was wrapped up like a burrito held by the helper, the vet exposed the claws and snipped the nail...he went too close to the quick and drew blood but had styptic (cornstarch) aplied it to the nail and the blood stopped immediately. The beak was easier, just held it steady between thumb and fore finger closed the snip carefully on the point, making sure tongue wasn/t near and SNIP. The bird didn't get scared at all, I was moer concerned.
The snip tool is like a scissors with a little carved out area that fits nail and beak; it is hard to describe. But it's essential to me.
Just a little confidence is needed.

There is a little black line and it looks like growth so I figured it needed to be done.

We are talking centimeters.

Beaks are full of nerves and blood vessels. Unless there is a real problem with beaks... they don't need trimmed and shouldn't be.

Imagine someone trimming your nose because it was a hair longer than the next lady that looks like you.

Kinda the same thing. Unique birds, unique faces.

ducky has used his beak to peck at me when hes pissy. I knew the vet sanded the tip of our old tiel and thought about it for ducky

I *think* you might be noticing his/her beak getting bigger and longer because s/he's maturing. This is a natural growing older thing.

The baby beaks almost makes them look like they are smiling.

Wow, that link was very interesting/disturbing. How sad to see those poor birds with those beaks. I've ALWAYS heard that the beaks are very sensitive to pain and you should never have anything done to them unless it is needed. Wow, those pics. really bothered me. Those poor parakeets. And that grey. But what a great link to put up Neo!

can you use cuttle fish instead of trimming?

those pore birds how uncomfortable that must be.

I have everything at hand for the birds. Natural perches, calcium perches, cuttle fish (lucky we live by the beach) wooden toys, their play stands in the lounge room are made from tree branches, their bird room has a gigantic twisted driftwood branch laying from one side of the room to the other, we dragged it off the beach, and they all love climbing around on it.

I reckon that even chewing into the icypole sticks we all give them to play with helps. over doing it ? lol maybe but for my birds, you just can't have too much of a good thing at hand
