Hello All.
I have just got my first IRN (Taj). We spent most of the day looking for the right bird but when we saw this young fellow we new we had to save him. Taj was in a very small cage in which he could hardly move and couldnt stand up straight.
Im not exactally sure what sex or age Taj is. I was told he was only 6 months old but he seems to have a faint ring around his neck. Is this normal or does this mean he is older than we think?
Also i cant put my hand in Taj's cage even to clean it, change his food or water without him squawking like a mad man. Can anyone help me with this or have any ideas at all?

Welcome to our family.
IRN's are a special breed, for sure. I recommend you read old posts by entering into 'search' on the top of the screen for keywords that concern you.
For a week or so, set close to the cage with it open, talk sweet and soft, put your hands slowly in and around the cage. NO direct eye contact... NONE. Look at the birds chest.
After you can do that without him freaking, then we will start teaching him to 'step up'. But first, you have to get trust built by sitting near the cage as I just described.
He needs to learn hands are good. Move slow and speak constantly in almost a baby voice.
Like:
Hey Hun, whats my baby doing? You a good girl? You sure are pretty on and on and on. If your hands are moving, so should your mouth be. To reassure.
welcome to u and taj

Hello and welcome to u both, wot mikaela is saying is spot on. I adopted a 2year male, 5 months ago. He's gone from being petrified of everything to excepting treats, he even comes out of the cage . Still havnt got him to step up yet . Anyway you've come to the right place for advice and tips. There are lots of expierienced irn owners and breeders who can give you the advice and encouragment that u need. Well done you anyway for taking the little fella on. Natalie

I cant help but be Irate when people feel the need to "save" a bird. Not mad at the people who want to help the poor thing, but at the shops or people that treat the animal so poorly that you feel compelled to help. These people should not be allowed to have animals. It makes me sooooo mad. Report them for animal cruelty and shut them down!! /rant off
Welcome to the boards and I wish you well with your bird. I'm sure you can give it the love and attention it deserves. It may take time and effort but even the most difficult birds can come around
