When should i put him to bed?

Post by Caitrose96 »

I've heard that Indian Ringnecks need around 12 hours of sleep a day. I often see him fighting to keep his eyes open in the middle of the day and was wondering when i see this if i should put him in his cage and let him sleep, or let him stay out on his perches?
I've only had my IRN for about a week now, he was not hand tame but has become really nice. I have taught him how to step up and wave, however he doesn't like to sit on me. Is there a way i can overcome this? He happily eats treats out of my hands.
I also heard that they go through an agressive teenage mood, he is around 11 months old now and i was wondering if i should be expecting this sometime soon?
If anyone has any suggestions on how i can make trust and love me that would be really helpful. I'm currently doing year 12 so i'm home studying most of the time with him, so i spend almost everyday waking minute with him. :D :D I'm so happy with my bird! I just have some questions!!

Hi,

Our bird is about the same age as yours.
He likes to have naps during the day, where ever he is. He usually gets about 11 and a half hours sleep at night. We cover his cage at about 8pm and he usually wakes up at about 7:30am, we hear him shuffling around or making little peeps and uncover him.
Our bird hasn't had an aggressive phase, he has always been flighted so he flies away if he feels threatened.

I think the best way to get him to want to sit on you is just to let him do what he likes! When we got our bird we just let him out of his cage, let him fly to a high place and did our own thing. He decided the toys we had placed on the curtain rails weren't as interesting as us after a few days and started paying more attention to us. Now we put a lot of time and effort into making him jungle gyms and play stands so we can have time to ourselves!
It sounds like your bird just needs time to get used to you, you are both doing great already.

Try searching foraging on here. Little birdies love keeping their minds busy! It is important to make sure your new bird can be independent and enjoy himself, for both of you. Also, after year 12, you may not have so much time for him so he will need to learn to play by himself.

Regards,
Claire
