"Please Help" Hawk trying to eat my birds problem
A number of times I have been lucky enough to be at home just as a hawk decides to try and make a meal out of my birds, therefore allowing me to scare them away. I am concerned that one day I may not be so lucky. I am wondering if anyone has had any success with deterrents of any kind such ultrasonic systems etc. I have hung cd's from my veranda which seems successful though is not practical with my suspended aviaries nor is netting. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

When I was a kid, we put double wire on our aviary after a cat climbed on the wire one night and pulled one of my peachface's legs out of its socket (what a horrible night, the poor little guy was sleeping on the wire).
Hopefully double wire should work for hawks too? My dad put a width of dowel between the two bits of wire so that they weren't clear against each other.
However, nothing will stop the birds getting frightened if a hawk/cat/etc tries to attack them.
I won't leave my birds outside in their inside cage without supervising them. I put them on a veranda once to sweep the floor and within 3 seconds, Janey was screaming because a Butcher bird was at their cage... boy did I run fast!

I would hope some of the breeders who keep outside aviaries would chime in here. However, if I were keeping my bird outside I would make essentially a cage-in-a-cage. I would put a secure barrier completely around the cage - including in-ground- and have the space between cages well large enough no little predatory arms could get in. Of course, there would have to be an additional layer of small mesh to protect against snakes. If you plan to take the birds in and out, going to need some kind of foyer to prevent escape as well.
Good luck with that. It's a major reason I don't even try to make fair weather housing for my bird outside here. I only take him out when I am there.
