yesturday i went to inspect my irns nest box an saw the fourth egg was missing but there was still only 3 chicks so i did some investigating and found a barried chick that had past on
i think it was either neglected because the parrents knew something was wrong with it, or it died naturally soon after hatching because it was a lot smaller than the rest but echo is a devoted mom and the remaining 3 are nice and fat and growing the oldest is a week old and it has definatly grown since the first time i laid eyes on it
but life goes on one of my zebra finch pairs has hatched 2 of their eggs and im pretty excited about that because the dad of them is a really light mutation known as a florida fancy its all cream, orange, and white like a normal one with no grey or black and i hope his genes have made some similar patterns
that has cheered me up and iv gotten over it. stuff happens and theres nothing we can do about it sometimes. at least i hope there was nothing i could do about it

Fingers crossed your zebra finches patterns are what you expected.
You must feel like a proud grandad with so many grandchildren, hehe

It would be gr8 to see some pictures when the chicks are mature enuf, good luck anyway. Natalie

id like to post some pics but my computer is out of comission so iv been using my uncles. he has a digital camera and a scanner but they are only set up for his mac not the pc he lets me use. he wont let me use his camera or mac becuase its his baby and he trust nobody with it (the price for each was in the quadruple digits!). and even if he had the time to come over to my house and take pictures he wouldnt have time to download and email me the pics he is always whining about that
i also cannot install software for a new camera on his pc because only an administrator/he can do that and he never has the time to do that either.
its not like i want him to do everything for me. i would do it myself but hes to afraid to let any of this equipment out of his sight only he is allowed to use it.
if i get a new digital camera he will let me install it on the administrator account after he checks the software out first wich he never has time for. i used to have a digital camera but my little brother and his friends stole and pawned it for arcade money. i left them battered brused and bleeding for that little stunt and they are still mad but thats what they get! little punks deserved it

be careful with how much nesting material there is in there. It shouldnt be able to get buried. Parents arent really going to go looking for missing chicks.

back when i first introduced the nestbox i only put a few inches in there and the female tossed most of it out and then i put a little more in and she tossed more of that out too. there is about 2-2 1/2 inches left in there
to much

Nobody knows if it is too much, it is up to your birds. She kept that much in there so that is the way she likes her nest.
As for the baby being buried, when babies die, the mother will generally bury it in the nesting material. There are numerous reasons why a baby could die so don't worry about it. It is her first time so these things happen.
Good luck with the rest of the babies

i dont know but i am pretty sure it was the last one to hatch because it was way smaller than the rest of them
