My IRN is 5 1/2 yrs old

Post by birdie5 »

Hi we've had Birdie for 5 1/2 yrs now, he is standard green color, and I have to say this is one of the best websites I have seen for IRNs. I found a chat page on yahoo, which wasn't as good as this one.

He is wonderful, he talks & interracts with everyone. He will greet you when you walk in the door with "Hello". His name is birdie because he says "hello birdie" so even though it is not a great name it is the name he knows, we also call him bubba too.

He talks not for enjoyment but to communicate. I realize this because he will ask you when he is thirsty "you want a drink of water" his speech is excellent. When he is waiting for you to come get him he calls out "come here, come on", "come over here", and if you ignore him he'll say "where you at!" sometimes in a demanding tone. If you still don't get him he'll say "what are you doin, huh" and end up with "help help" (which is the funniest).

He loves to wake you up in morning by saying "come on, wake up wake up" or "wake up boy" and when you open your eyes he says "you workin today". Followed by making the coffee machine noise of water percolating to remind us to make coffee, although he will say once in awhile "you makin coffee". He will even stir your coffee with a spoon for you.

He also cries like a baby, when I am holding him and rubbing his head I say "aw poor poor baby" he cries exactly like an infant which is funny because we don't have a baby & he is never around babies. He will also do a monkey noise "coo coo coo". I was listening to the soundbites that is on this site, he doesn't sound like those, but birdie liked how they sounded, as we were listening he said "hello, what are you doin?" which was funny. I would love to share his speech but am unsure how you do it.

When I take him in the car and it is cold out I tell him "you want to go bye bye in the car get in my coat" and he runs into my sleeve, he stays there until he gets into the car and if it is warm enough he will come out & sit on my shoulder otherwise he stays in my coat for the ride.

He loves to be around company he has to be part of everything that is going on. He only goes home at night and when we aren't at home otherwise he is on our shoulder.

He loves to cuddle under the blanket at night. Other than talking he is quiet for the most part, he only squawks at 9:30 at night because he wants the lights out by barking twice "ark ark", he likes to cuddle under the blanket with me then he falls asleep for about an hour, when he is ready to go home for the night he comes out from under the blanket and gives me a kiss.

He is also people trained, when he has to go he will get antsy & pace back & forth on your shoulder and touch your ear. He tries not to make on you, but he is a bird after all. I feel that he is very intelligent with how he has learned to communicate over the years.

I would love to post a picture but not sure how to do it, if anyone has any advice would love to hear. I can't get over how little there is on these birds and think this site is long overdue. I can say if you are new with your IRN, that patience is how we taught our birdie and as you can read the results are well worth it, it took me over 1 1/2 yrs for him to let me touch or handle him, and yes it was with repitition that finally I won and now he won't go without being with me every minute of the day.

Take care for now,
Barbara & Birdie

Super smart Birdie!

Wow, Barbara, Birdie sure sounds clever? Did you teach Birdie all of that stuff? I'd sure like to know how you did it, I had my IRN for almost 5 years and was only able to teach him how to say "OW" right after he bit me! It was one of his favourite games even though I only said it once because he caught me by surprise, and at that time he'd only been with us for about a week! Our IRN was 5 years old when we adopted him, was able to talk but I was unable to teach him anything new, despite incessant trying. Although before he went to his new home he was working on something new but it wasn't yet clear enough to distiguish. Perhaps his new human will let us know what it is when he (the IRN) finally says it clearly, since he's a friend of ours.

Again, what a great companion your Birdie sounds like. I'm glad that you found this site because I did lots of searching on the Internet also and there really wasn't anything out there for those of us who have these birds for companions. Lots of breeder sites, though. Good luck here and look forward to more Birdie stories!
Have a great day!

We got him when we were on vacation, he was a baby only 3 mos. He bonded immediately with my husband, we weren't sure what to do with him or how to train him. The first sign we saw that he would train, was when we got back to our hotel with him and my husband was sitting on the floor eating pretzels, birdie started to climb out of the box the petshop gave us, climbed up his arm on his shoulder & Bill handed him a pretzel which he took & loved. We realized that with food we could earn his trust which my husband earned immediately. He was apparently hand trained from the start and they did an excellent job with him. We drove home from that vacation with birdie not in the box but on Bill's shoulder feeding him fruit & healthy snacks all the way home.

I know alot of people who've adopted birds, unfortunately it is hard to earn their trust when they are not babies because they are used to whatever routines they were taught before. It just takes alot longer. We adopted a Cockatoo last fall which turned out really bad I had to find a better home for him he bit too much & drew blood, I couldn't take the chance of him hurting birdie or my kids.

Take care,
Barbara

Hello

Welcome to this forum!

Aw, thanks for the kind comments. I am happy the group is starting to grow as well. We need more Ringneck enthusiasts. I really enjoy reading other peoples post and learning from each other.

Your Ringneck sounds really tame. Keep up the good work! If you scan the photos and e-mail them to me I would be happy to post them for you. Private message me for my e-mail address.

Best wishes,

[[color=blue]b]Hi I am new in this forum but I am surprised to what people story about their pets. :) Before my husband and I could'nt believe that this pets can really talk but I open one of the members websites and we actually heard the words that their pet can say. I wish you can post the words or sounds of your birdie so we can hear them, I am excited to hear them.
I have a pair of green IRN but they are'nt tame. Actually they are nesting right now and one time the male(joey) jumped on me when I was feeding them. I think they becomes so agressive when they are nesting.
I would check back here to see if you able to post the sounds of your birdie, I do enjoy seing members pets pictures or hear the sounds that their pets can do. That's all for now.

Happy to be part of this forum I am learning a lot from you guys. :)

Sounds of Birdie

Post by birdie5 »

Hi Maxi & Joey,

I would love to post Birdie's words, but I am not sure how to do something like this. If anyone knows, I would love some computer advice.

Thanks for your kind words. I know that when Birdie is going through his mating season, (he doesn't have a partner) he gets more possesive of me.

I would imagine if he had a partner how much more aggressive he would get. He plays mating with my shoulder & kisses me. This mating season (lasts for about 2 weeks) he gets jealous of anyone else who tries to kiss me only he doesn't bite he just has to kiss me more. Funny thing, when he finishes his mating thing, he looks at me and has the nerve to say "what are you doing?" like I am the one doing something funny.

I know that if I were to get him a partner, he would not like us as much as he does.

Take care,
Barbara & Birdie

What an amazing bird!! My Chook is only saying Hello, Chookie, Chook Chook and copies the sound of my husband coughing. He hates the word bye bye because he knows it means we are going. He will try and hide in my handbag when I am leaving or will chase me and bite my toes (and it hurts!) Chook also sleeps in bed with me but he knows to wait until 5.00am when my husband gets up to go to work otherwise he gets booted out. He looks at our other birds in the averies and won't interact with them - I think he believes he is human. He whistles the dogs and confuses them because they think its us - he is quite evil with this trick. He waits for the dogs to go to the back of our property and then whistles and when they finally get up to the house they realise it was the bird.

Chook has started to do what I call a mating dance. I'm not sure if that's what it is though. He is my first pet bird. The reason I think its a mating dance is because he sees my toes and gets all excited and prances around with funky neck movementsand regurgitates on them. Although when he's on my shoulder he does his dance and stands horizontally with just his claws digging in and does his weird head jerks. Thank God he doesn't regurgitate then also.

When I'm eating he has to eat what I have. He lets me know he is ready for another beakful by biting gently on my ear. He also loves to wake up my 9 year old son by jamming his beak in his mounth and picking his teeth or pulling his eyelashes softly.

I am continually amazed by birds and am sad that I never knew what friendship people and birds could have until now.

I'd love to hear more stories!! I am computer dumb and don't know how to hear the words birds say or even post a picture. I don't have a scanner or camera or anything - just a computer.

Chook

Post by birdie5 »

Hi Jade,

Chook sounds wonderful, I am sorry I haven't written sooner, sometimes it takes me a while to respond. I got the biggest kick out of your stories, chook is a male I am guessing from your mating routine story. It sure sounds like mating to me, and I completely understand when you said he thinks he is human. What color is chook, how old is he and when did you get him?

We are two seasons past mating rituals in my home, he does his mating dance on my right shoulder (for about 2 weeks), similiar to what you are describing more closely to the first time Birdie did his mating, it was much funnier this time around, I guess he is perfecting it.

He digs his feet by grabbing tightly, so he can sway his head while kissing me, and his wings come down (I am guessing they would go around the females back? like a cover) he shakes his tale the whole time, when he is done he jerks to a tall stand & looks at me & says "what are you doin?" like I was doing anything in the first place.

Take care and please share more stories, love to hear more,
Barbara

Hi Barbara,

Thanks for getting back to me! Chookie is 18 months old and green. His mother was a green split yellow and she had chook and one other green and a yellow in his clutch.

I had a feeling from when he was still a featherless little fellow that he was a bloke. I never found anything very feminine about him at all!! My husband thinks I'm a bit nuts because he reckons that I couldn't possibly know his sex until he matures...ha! As soon as a feint line appeared (kinda like when a boy gets that first little feint moustache) I knew for sure. I had bet my husband $50.00 but he still won't give it to me until he has 100% proof ie. a full black ring around his neck!! Typical.

Chook actually has just learned a new phrase..'come on'. He is saying this really quietly at the moment but he'll get more confident I'm sure.

Anyway, I have to dash, I'll follow up later. I'd also love to here more about your fellow - what a cutie!!

I'm back. Had to run because I do all of this from work and I had a client coming in!

Well, what an event in my house! We just had severe storms here in Australia and I was actually in the aviary with my King Parrots when a massive gust of wind literally picked it up and the door popped open. My male parrot got out but I managed to grab the cage and shut the door before the female got out too. Then the storm hit and the male Kingy was stuck in a neighbour's tree calling out to his lady. After the storm he was flying about over our house calling out and so I put the female in a cage inside the aviary and left the door open. She called and called but he wouldn't come back. Anyway, this morning I got up at 5.00 and waited. He still wouldn't come near the aviary but then my Chookie started whistling and imitating the King Parrot's call. The male Kingy was interested and came down and so I put Chook in the aviary and he kept whistling and the male came in to investigate (probably thinking a new bird had moved in on his wife) and I slammed the door shut (rescued Chook) and got him back!!

Anyway, you can probably tell that I am excited I got my bird back and amazed that my Chookie saved the day! By the way, we have also named the Kingys Bonny & Clyde.

Anyway, once more I have to go. I'd love to hear more about Birdie. I've told heaps of people about him and I can only wish that Chook turns out just as great.
