Hi there

So my man has got orders for Germany i just found out (he is in the Army). I am getting my new IRN on the 11th of may. Does anyone on here know about traveling internationally with Birds? I have been researching a little but just wanted to know if anyone on here had first hand experience?

I hate to say this, but I would recommend not getting the bird. You are going to have headaches both coming and going. Although, thier might be a express method as part of a military move. Contact your husbands travel branch and the new command and ask about transporting pets and ringnecks specifically as each pet type and species may differ.

Otherwise, your bird will have to deal with expensies of quarentine coming and going which is not going to help on your relationship with the baby or its tameness.

Another option would be to wait until you got there and got a bird. Again check out beforehand what you would have to do to bring it back to the US.

Wonderful news we are NOT going, I was really freaking out about trying to take pets with us! He was able to get out of his orders thank goodness, especially because he intends to get out of the military. Thank you for your help though!

Just in case you do ever have to travel back to the states...it is not hard at all to travel with your bird. I spent 9 years overseas in the military and then traveled 36 hours here to Hawaii and always had my pets with me. Birds fall under two categories. CITES birds and non CITES birds. Any bird listed under the wild bird conservation act will be listed as a CITES bird and will need a permit to travel with. That is a LOT of work. But for you and many others, most widely known birds are not on the CITES list. To name a few... budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus), cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus), rose-ringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri), and the peach-faced lovebird (Agapornis roseicollis) are not listed by CITES. Therefore all you would require to travel is a EU pet passport which you can obtain at any military installation vet clinic or German vet clinic. Since most military vets are general vets, I would find a German aviary vet. Once you have your birds passport, you can travel easily in and out of the country with NO quarantine issues. There are very few places that require bird quarantines if they are a non CITES bird. You can contact the Frankfurt airport and ask for pet friendly airlines. Your bird will have to travel below, but most cargo holds are temperature controlled these days. And if not a regular airline, they have PetAir in Germany. Thank you for all that information! i had read allot about the CITES stuff, and now know more then i need if i ever do travel with my bird. But again I'm so so lucky we just found out he actually is NOT going and was able to get out of his orders, so we are staying in nice comfy washington, where i am only 15 mins from my breeder thank goodness!

We are actually not married yet, we would of had to rush a marriage if we had gone to germany, which woould have sucked! so I'm not sure about housing here. I am a washington girl though its beautiful here and lots of places to hike and things to do.

I'm so glad you didn't have to rush your marriage. That is super stressful. You probably would have loved Germany though. I've heard from numerous people that it is very similar to Washington state. I loved it there. Wish I didn't have to leave well, good luck with your new bird...post lots of pics
