Baby IRN little bit frightened

Post by Jolz1987 »

Hi,
i have just recently brought home a approx 8 week old baby IRN, i have been advised by the breeder that it has been hand reared ect ect.
i got it three days ago and for the first two days would hardly eat the baby food i was feeding, yesterday i had a little more luck but it still dosnt seem to be all that enthusiastic about eating off the spoon, as in it dosent chatter or get excited for dinner time.

also for an apparently hand raised bird when i aproach the cage to get it out for a feed or even so much as check on it it gets quiet frightened and flighty,

dose anyone know why this could be happening?

any answers or explinations would be greatly appreciated

I have heard of young new birds taking a week or so to adapt to new surroundings and owners, even when they've been hand-reared. I'd be a bit concerned if it wasn't showing any interest in food though after a couple of days?
Hopefully someone more experienced than me can assist you in your query, though, as I have only experienced a second hand mature IRN, who ate everything we gave him from the start, was a bit quiet to start with but has a HUGE personality now :)

When I brought home my IRN he was 4 weeks old, it's my first time owning a bird and I was very worried because he didn't seem very happy but after a few days he settled down and got used to me. It does take a little while for them to adjust, you must just try to handle them as much as possible, soon they'll be more relaxed :)
My bird is now 8 weeks old and isn't really interested in his porridge anymore, around this time it's normal. I have pellets that I leave in his cage and I give him cooked veggies like peas, carrots and sweetcorn, he LOVES them, and sometimes for dinner I give him a bit of porridge. I try to vary it everyday so it's not too boring for him. I'm not an expert but it just sounds like your bird is weaning himself off his baby food, which is normal around this time, you can keep feeding him porridge but try introducing some different foods too :)

Thanks for the tips guys, greatly appreciated.
Storm ( my baby IRN) has indeed settled down quiet a bit and is eating much better now, still a little flighty when we aproach the cage to get him out to spend time with but im hoping that in time that will settle.
when we got him we were told that he would need 3 feeds daily but doing with doing that he dosent seem all that interested in the midday feed, so i have decided to drop that and jsut feed him morning and night and also give him the option of assorted fresh seed each day along with fresh apple cooked carrot corn beans and peas, so far all have been a super HIT. his last feed of the porrige is as late as possible in the night and he seems really really love that as well.

fingers crossed things keep progressing the way they are.
thanks again.

PS any tips on favourite foods for your baby IRN

Awesome to hear. Sounds like you're doing okay.
These little guys are tricky :) but give an assortment and you'll soon see what they pick out and what they don't really like. Because my IRN is still a baby, I boil all his food until it is really soft so it's easier for him to eat. Stuff like peas, corn, butternut, sweet potato, green beans ect, I always check the list that I linked you.
Sometimes I also boil sweet potato, butternut and apples and put them in a food processor until its the same consistency as his porridge and feed him that with a spoon for dinner, he loves it
