Hi there,

Thought it might be time to 'Introduce' ourselves, since I've been trawling this site for infomation for the last few days, and making a few post's (made my 10, just waiting for the 5 day period to expire to prove I'm not a spammer! :D )

The story so far......a week ago now, my husband and I rescued an IRN from certain imminent death......when we first spotted him playing 'chicken' with several cars, I realised immediately that he was not a native Australian bird, and had obviously escaped from somewhere nearby. Now this little dude had absolutely no road sense what-so-ever, and I have no doubt that he would not have survived the day, so we're pretty sure he had only escaped that day sometime. Aside from the car issue, he also had a flock of seagulls circling around, taking a bit of interest in him :(

It took me awhile, but with the help from some passers-by, I finally coaxed him close enough to capture him....where he promptly started biting my hand ferociously - OUCH!! We quickly popped him into a large paper bag (I know! I felt TERRIBLE!) until we got to my sister's to borrow her bird cage. We have now been looking after him for a week, have placed Lost & Found notices with local vets, on Parrot Alert, Gumtree (Western Australia), and numerous Facebook Lost & Found pages relative to our area, with no luck so far. I have also diligently been trawling through all the sites looking for anyone who has lost an IRN matching his description, but as yet no one has listed him as missing. If we don't find his owner, then we are more than happy to adopt him, but want to take all steps possible at finding the correct owner, otherwise it wouldn't feel right. So as yet, we haven't given him a name, but I have taken to call him 'buddy' or 'pretty boy' in the interim :)

In the meantime, we have deduced that he was probably not hand-raised, more likely an aviary bird, so not very tame, but I've been spending everyday with him to try and gain his confidence. If I'm sitting in on the lounge on my laptop, I have him next to me on the side table, if I go outside to the patio, he comes with me, if I'm in the kitchen making lunch, I put his cage on the little table so he can see me. And I talk to him all the time. He doesn't talk back yet, but I'm almost POSITIVE that yesterday when I left him out on the patio by himself for awhile, I could hear him trying to say something....maybe "pretty boy"..???? (I say that a lot to him)....or I could be just kidding myself, lol,

And he definitely does not like our hands anywhere near him! No matter how slow and careful we are! But today I had some success!! Up until yesterday the best I could do was get him to take a small treat through the bars above his head only (won't take it if offered through the side of cage).....I worked out a couple of days ago that he absolutely ADORES fresh apple, so decided I would try and use this as his treat in training. This morning he finally took a small bit out of my palm....well it was actually sitting more toward the end of my fingers, not actually IN my palm.....but my hand was inside the cage (which he hates - the hand, not the cage).....and so long as I wasn't looking at him, he would tentatively lean over and gently take the apple....keeping a careful eye on me at the same time. I did this twice...the first time with just one piece, then told him he was a good boy and withdrew my hand. The second time I had 2 pieces, and left my hand in there while he ate the first bit, then waited (took awhile) until he took the second piece, told him good boy and withdrew my hand. Not sure if I'm using the right technique, but it seems to be working :D

Well, I think I've dribbled on enough for now (that's if anyone is still reading this? ), look forward to updating you all on our progress, both with finding the owner, (although we're becoming quite attached to him now :( ), and how our lil' buddy is going. We welcome any hints, tips, suggestions, advice and look forward to getting to know you all and your feathered friends

Regards Deb

Hi Deb

Welcome to this great IRN site. I am also a newbie at keeping IRN's but you will find that there are wonderful people on this site, all willing to help. Seems buddy is one lucky guy, having been saved by someone who is obviously very caring. I shudder to think what might have happened had he not been rescued in time by you. Ringnecks are an absolute pleasure to keep. You will certainly love the experience.

Kind Regards
Eshana

Hi Eshana,

Thanks so much for the welcome. And yes, this site and the people on it are just fantastic! So much information all in the one place, and I just love seeing all the pics from everyone - so many gorgeous and different colours, and of course the baby chicks are just too cute (although my husband thinks they're 'fugly' )

I'm making heaps of progress with my little man (leaning toward calling him 'Charlie', after Ray Charles, cos he does this thing with his head where he swings it around from side to side, almost violently at times!! :? ), but he isn't as fearful today when I put my hand in the cage to feed him apple off my palm, and is taking it a lot sooner than before. I think he may be getting used to me :D

We finally bit the bullet and ordered him a bigger cage today.....early days, I know, as we still may find the rightful owner, but we just can't stand to see him in the smaller cage anymore. I mean, he can still move around and is comfortable and all, but the cage is more suited to a couple of budgies than an IRN. His tail feather almost touches the bottom of the cage when he's sitting on his perch :| Looking forward to getting the new cage, and worse case scenario, if we find Charlie's owners, well we can either sell the cage, or find a breeder nearby and buy our own little guy....and maybe a little friend for him too!

Sounds like you did him a great deed!!!
What color is he/she?
is it older? does it have the ring already to distinguish boy from girl?

You are doing everything right! the first step is to get the bird comfortable with you! and that is getting them to take the treats from you through the bars where you are safe, and he feels safe taking it! and them working your way up just like you are doing. it could take alot of time, But it seems like you are working in the right direction!
They also learn fast!!!

My Micah is 9 months old in just a few days and his vocab is amazing already, he says Step up, Come here, Good boy, Whatcha doin doin, Peeek -a -boo, Pretty boy, Micah Bird,Gimmy a kiss?, Kiss kiss, MUAH, he also does the pretty girl whistle and the come here whistle makes kissing sounds and he screams...like my kids lets out a loud AHHHHH lol. IRNS are amazing Fids :) hopfully everything works out for you! wether that is finding the owner, or being able to adopt your new friend!

Hi Shonna,

Thanks for your encouragement.....we feel like we are making progress with him, but just taking baby steps ATM. We realise it may take months to get him to allow us to touch/hold him on our hand......and it just may be that he'll never let us, but we'll love him anyway! He is just sooo cute! And yes he has his rings, he's a boy, so we guess he is at least 2yo (?), although it's entirely possible that he's even older.....and he's blue.

We let him out of the cage yesterday arvo, for the second time - the first time was a bit of a disaster, way too soon, and we had trouble getting him back in, which set us back a few days :( But yesterday was just AMAZING! He climbed to the top of his cage at first, and after sussing out the room, started warming up his wings like a jet aeroplane testing it's engine's. When he felt confident enough he took a lap around the room, and then perched up on top of the french doors, where he proceeded to put on impromptu show for us! We couldn't believe it!
During the week I had heard him try to mutter of few things but couldn't work out what they were. We still couldn't work out what he was saying this time, but OMG, did he have LOTS to say!! Almost non-stop for 40 minutes he kept repeating several different 'phrases' over and over, while walking along the top of the door. The one thing we thought we could recognise was 'Bow down', where he would literally 'bow' as he said it :o And then best of all, when he'd had enough of being out, he quietly made his way back to his cage, and after a bit of investigating, climbed back inside. All his activity must have given him an appetite because he got stuck into his seed then his vegie kabob and then his hanging fruit bar thing!! Hungry boy!

So it appears that at some stage he has had some training, yet he doesn't recognise basic commands like 'Step up', and still fears our hand anywhere near him.....the closest we can get is to slowly put our hand in the cage palm up with a piece of apple, but that's it. Still, he has given us much joy, and if it turns out he's not comfortable enough to come to us, so be it. When we decide it's time to add to our brood, we'll just make sure we get one who's hand-reared :)

Still waiting on his new bigger cage - it's coming from the eastern states (Australia) so it might take a week to get here :( But to buy the same thing here in WA would cost us $100 - $200 more, so we opted to buy online. Hopefully it won't take to long....we are excited to see how he reacts to a roomier home, and can't wait to decorate it with toys and foraging idea's :D

Shonna, your little man is just gorgeous!! One of my 3 favourite colours, (being blue, grey and violet  ) Do you know what his genetics are? I wish I knew what Skittles parents colours were, but we'll never know :|

We made Skittles a 'Play Gym' on the weekend out of a branch stuck in a bin of sand, and have hung toys, rope, and a snuggle buddy from it.....he just LOVES it!! (and it has stopped him from flying up and perching on our ceiling fan, which hangs directly above our leather ottoman :!: ) I'll post some pics later.

Our big cage arrived for him today, so I'm heading outside to see if I can put it together before my husband gets home from work  Wish me luck!

I really wnt to make a play gym for micah, I have been asking my hubby to help me with it for a while now, Im not very handy with that kind of stuff.

and what a coinsidence! those are my 3 fav colors as well!!!!! Blue Grey and Purple!

I got him from an amazing breeder, who hand rears them. His dad is a Slate(grey) as well, and his mom is a Blue

Hi Shonna,

Micah has very nice looking parents! Glad you have found a good breeder - I think I might have a bit of trouble finding one over here in Western Australia.....there don't seem to be many :? I think we have decided to try and get a friend for Skittles sooner rather than later, now.......it's become quite apparent that he needs to have company of his own kind, and although he seems to have quite a vocabulary from the previous owner/s, (although most of it we can't decipher yet), I really don't think he will ever let us handle him. Our thoughts are to maybe get a hand-tamed hen, and hope that she rubs off on him - and not the other way round, and have him rub off on her so we can't handle her anymore :!:

The assembly of the new cage was very easy. Took awhile to convince Skittles to check it out at first, I think he was a little bit daunted by the size of it after living in a much smaller temporary home for a couple of weeks, but once he was in, he was climbing all over the place, checkin' it out

Here's a pic of his set-up :D

Wow! Amazing set up! That was the cage I wanted to get for Micah, But it was a bit out of our price range at the time. Amy didnt expect to have babies until this summer, and she ended up with eggs last fall, and I was first on her wait list, so it was very unexpected and we were unprepared, so, for now he has a plane jane cage =) But, its big! he can fly from the bottom to top if he wanted to.

One we get our upstairs redone, he will be moving up there along with the kids' play room and my office space. im going to make a corner thats all his, rope swings, and perches attached to the wall. Just a matter of the hubby getting it done hah :D

A new friend could do him alot of good! I dont know to much about when they bond though, I do hear they become a bit more aggresive, But I could be compleatly wrong as Ive never had any personal experience with it. Maybe seeing a new bird out and on you and cluddling, he might get jelous and want the same thing.

He is certainly one spoiled FID already!

Yeah, that's certainly what we were thinking (hoping) might happen. We're now wondering if maybe we should get a younger hand-reared bird, so it can better bond with us......I'd just be worried that he might get TOO jealous and attack it.....or else he'd be so relieved that we were not trying so hard anymore to get him to like us
It's so hard sometimes, I just wanna cuddle him, he so cute, but Nah! He's just not that into me! :) I reckon he's even more afraid (or independant?) of us now he's in the bigger cage, too, he's not as willing to take his favourite treat out of my hand anymore.
On a more positive note though, we had him outside (in his cage) on the back patio with us this morning, and as it got quite warm, I grabbed the garden hose and turned the nozzle to the mist setting.....he TOTALLY lapped it up, clinging to the side of the cage, spreading his wings out, doing this bobbing , weaving sort of dance against the cage, turning around, hanging upside down.......it was just gorgeous to see!! :D The things that make us smile, eh?

Yep, we certainly do spoil him, but I bet you spoil Micah too :)

I wish Micah liked that!!! ive tried everything to do with baths, Like getting him a shower perch etc, all he likes is a tall sided colorful plate to bath in (go figure haha a bird bath!)
Im glad he enjoyed it! and hes probably just getting used to the sudden change again, he will start taking treats from your hands in no time im suree.

Micah is definatly spoiled! The breeder and I still talk on facebook, and she makes him toys all the time (we purchase them) But I tell her what he likes/is into at the current time and she makes something specifically for him. hes a chewer for sure! he likes anything paper or wooden that he can tare apart

Image

just took this =) hes out right now trying to eat my mouse cable, like always...So i have to hide it..and now hes eating a piece of toast on my mouse pad...that looks more like a crumb pad

Lol  that's too cute, Shonna! Yes they do like making a mess, but somehow it doesn't seem to worry me as much as when the humans make the mess
