should i use a hollow tree (cut down to size) or a nesting box? please can i have you help as the breeding season is fast approaching

I cant really tell you anything from experience, but base on my research, any of them is fine.
If you have both, then let the hen choose. put them both in if they fit.

thanks and i have found a 30cm wide hollow log with a 10cm wide peep hole and also a boot shaped nesting box i have put both in and they seem to like the log because she is going in and out of it every 5min
