Our bird doesnt like me

Post by happybird »

I would love some tips - have had a baby IRN (currenly 5 and half months) for 1 month. He was hand reared by a man. He was beautiful and sweet when we got him, but as he has become comfortable his affection is aimed exclusively at my husband, he is so sweet, he nuzzles and coos into his neck, but resists any attempt of contact from me and bites me (never bits my husbacnd). I don't think i do anything differently to my husband. i am am currently the one who gives him his treats. What can we do to even out his affections?

Do you do any trick training with them (eg. teaching them to turnaround, etc.)? That helps create a bond as it provides the bird mental stimulation and they get treats.

Keep putting in the time and being the one to give her treats. If it gets really bad you can ask your husband to stop interacting with the bird for a time.

Thanks Ellie.I read some of your previous posts that have been very helpful too. So far, he will interact with me when treats are involved, so we're starting there :) I have changed my attitude a bit, and will continue to work patiently with him. I am grateful he has bonded with at least one of us, as I would hate it if he weren't happy with either of us.

If the bird will take treats from you that's a great sign. I use treats to get my birds to do things they wouldn't do otherwise. For example, when Janey is engaged in nesting behaviour and she doesn't want to stop. Me calling her and asking her to step up will do nothing... but if I can find a high enough value treat she will almost always come. Sometimes the high value treat is a bit of banana, sometimes it's a tiny flake of a corn chip, sometimes it's a bit off a muesli bar and this morning it was a bit of passion fruit.

Good luck to you. Good on you for persevering. I hope your bird rewards you! :)
