Vacations?

Post by Sjazzmean »

What do you do with your ringneck if you're leaving for a, lets say 7 days or longer vacation?
If someone else is taking care of it for that while, will it still be tame when you get home?

I'm used to aviary birds, so I know nothing much about tame birds.
I just recieved a handraised bird from my father's friend. Although she/he is not very tame, I would like to try and make him/her tame, she's 10 months old.
However, I do like to travel and will go on vacations that lasts 7-14 days a few times a year, and weekend vacations several times a year. That is why I'm asking. My dog is with me everywhere I travel, but I suppose you can't have a parrot in a hotel? Haha :)

Also, I'm often on my father's farm, so I'm wondering will the parrot get stresses and confused if I bring it's cage with me the weekends I'm on the farm every other week?

Hope you won't be to harsh with me as I'm new to this, haha :D
Thank you!
Kind regards -

This is always a problem for us. We have found one cottage that has let us take the birds but this is extremely rare!

Sometimes we get someone to stay in our house and look after them. Other times we take them to my husband's father to look after.

Nobody else spends the same time with them that we do but they adjust pretty well. Ideally we'd like to find others in our local area who have tame parrots too who are also looking for someone to have their birds holiday with.

We have also tried bird boarding - all of which required a vet check. There are some that will let your birds out and provide foraging and enrichment.

When the birds were younger I'd say it took a good day or two to adjust to new surroundings both when we took them to their holiday destination and when we took them home. But now that they are older I think it probably takes a couple of hours for them to adjust.

Thank you for your answer!
I do know people who can take care of the bird when I'm away, I just don't want to cause him/her stress.
I live in Copenhagen, Denmark :)

I worry about the stress of it all too. Each professional boarding place we've taken them to, we've never been back mostly because we felt that our birds were overwhelmed with having so many other bigger parrots around. Both places we've been to were good places, we just felt that all of the other birds scared them. Having said that if I had no other choice I would still consider it. The best thing to do is to have a close friend or family member who can spend regular time with them generally and let them look after them when you're away. Unfortunately we don't have anyone who fits that bill.
