hi
i have a blue male is about 2years old (that was what we where told) we have had him 2weeks and need help.

we want to tame him but he is not, he is very scared of us, he seems ok when we do day to day things and seems to have warmed a little to me but he doesnt talk and very rarely sqaurks unless u go to grab him.

ive tried talking to him but he just looks uninterested, he occasinaly seems to get playfull by jumping from one perch to the other then when i get to close he runs to the back wall of his cage.

he won't take food from fingers through the bars, i have treid putting my hand in his cage for 5 mins and few times a day he has got slightly better he goes from one side to the other (pacing) on the back of his cage and then started to sit on perch.

would love some advice to tame him i have had a conure before and he was silly tame and would love blue to be the same.

thanks

Hi Rachel

I just wanted to post to say that we have an IRN with the same type of behaviour at the moment.

We got Sullie just over a month ago now, he was about 11 weeks old. He hasn't been hand reared at all and was very very scared of us.

I have had birds all my life but I've never had an IRN, and i'm finding them very different from other birds.

This forum is fantastic and already we have learnt so much from the people who post on here. When we first got him, we were staring at him in the eyes, which we now know isn't a good thing when they are afraid of you, so when he's scared we try not to make eye contact. Sullie is still frightened of our hands but I feel everyday is getting better and better and it's just going to take a while for him to trust us.

Everyday he sits with us in his cage in our office. We put the cage between us so we're right next to his cage and over the past few weeks he has settled down and sits chattering away to himself and eats his dinner with us. He still goes a little bit mad when we put our hands in, but I'd say even that is getting better. Even at this moment he is in his cage sat by the side of me with his little foot up watching me type - wow he's a cutie!! hehe

My advice would be to have patience, sit with him, talk to him, spend as much time as you can with him to show him that you don't wanna hurt him, you just want to be part of his flock.

I know it's going to take us a while with Sullie, but I love him to bits already and couldn't imagine the house without his little baby parrot sqwarks and his funny little sounds - so if you can, just be with him as much as possible and give him time to get to know you

I hope this helps, and i'm sure the lovely people on this forum have some fantastic advice for you x

Good Luck

Hi Rachel

Sweetedge has given you some good advice there.

You were talking about putting food between the bars for your bird. Keep doing this. Look for small progress. If he looks interested in the food or takes a step towards the food then say 'good bird' or whatever your 'you're a good bird' phrase is and put the food in his food dish. Over time you offer reward for incrementally larger behaviors and eventually he will be eating from your hand. Next step then might be trying to get yorur bird to take food from your hand when your hand is in the cage.

Also, make sure you know what his fav foods are and make it so that he can only get them from you. To find out his fav foods put a heap of different things in his food bowl and watch what he eats first.

Good luck!

Ellie
