Feather dust - health risk

Post by melindaott »

Hi guys

I have recently heard about a lady that was diagnosed with emphysema. Apparently the docter said that it is due to the dust from her IRN's feathers... Can this be true?
I am only concerned because we stay in a very small place and will probably also be exposed to this "feather dust" from my IRN.

Google - Pigeon Fanciers Lung. It is a condition people can get if allergic to bird dust. The dust from the feathers may make the symptoms of emphysema worse but I dont think they could cause it in the enviroment your talking about.

I've heard air purifiers can help.

I was watching the video found here last night:

It's long but there was a bit explaining birdie dandruff/dust & steps you can take to minimize exposure.

Excessive bird dust can indeed cause problems in the long run. To prevent it, have few birds, let them bathe, and keep the cages clean. When changing the cage papers, I first spray the paper with the water/vinegar solution I use for cleaning. It moistens the dust and keeps it on the paper instead of it flying all around.

I don't find IRNs to be dusty in comparison with a cockatiel!

Also, you might want to get a can of air, take the panel off the computer, and blow that out every few months. Those little feathers and the bird dust can get everywhere.

I've been called 'birdbrained' before, but somehow I don't think this is what they meant. say:hah-nay
