Black in Baby's wings...

Post by Mikaela »

Hey Ya'll:

As I have recently noticed, baby has a faint bit of black in her wing coloring... not good. She is lacking in her diet despite my efforts.

Today I went to the store and asked for the best food to nip this in the bud and I was given a Kaytee brand. I threw the bag away after I put it in the container (a little absent minded lately) but nontheless I hope this helps with the black that is beginning to show in Babies wings.

Boos are fine though and they eat the same thing.

So, I am going to continue with her fresh foods and veggies and try this new pellet/ seed diet. She didnt have the black in her feathers until I recently switched her (successfully, finally) to all pellets, no seed.

Seed is a critical part of the diet too, don't switch and leave it out.

We have discussed this with our vet 100's of times, over 100's of birds and what we have come up with is simply, 1/3 fresh food 1/3 pellets 1/3 seed is the best balance you can give.

Right now my crew all have stress bars, and its not diet related at all. It is stress related, the move to our new house has been hard for everyone involved and they were mid molt when we did it :(.

I'd dig up that bag if I were you BTW, Kaytee has made some changes but some of their diets still contain Etboxyquin, a very very nasty preservative.

"Etboxyquin: Developed for use in the production of rubber, this preservative has been found to cause thyroid, kidney, reproductive and immune related illnesses as well as cancer. "

Mmm Mmm?

That is EXACTLY what I was told yesterday. I dont know how I lost the seed part somewhere. Nonetheless, I caught it early so she will be better soon. Bless her heart. I feel like **** about it.

This bag as a few more unshelled sunflower seeds than I would like it to but we'll see what happens. He favorite treat is the sunflower seed but when I removed them completely from her diet, her aggression fell DRAMATICALLY.

Yea, I'm not a big fan of sunflower. A lot of birds seem to have a problem with it.

Safflower is almost the same nutritional value, but seems to have less problems... I dunno why? I use it as a training treat on occasion...

It is now only a faint shimmer of black that I never really noticed until I started using my new camera. 4 Mp no black now black hehe.

I just hope I hooked her up with a good stable before it got too bad.

God this may be the dumbest question ever asked but I have no fear: Do they make a treat vitimin? Or something you can put into their water?

Ours still have stress bars on their tails from when we got them from their parents. stressful going from feathered parents to hairy ones, lol.

The black won't go away, but when that feather is replaced it should. ^^

The black cant be seen anymore, not even in pictures.

I didnt notice it until I got the new camera. Then I noticed and took her outside for inspection. Yep, although faint there was some black.

Jen:

Did I see black in your babys wings too? Or was s/he wet? I dont remember what pic but want to make sure you know black = inadequate diet. Not saying YOURS IS! Just saying I saw it in your baby but he or she may have been a little wet then.

Check them both good. They were probably wet when the pic was taken. Just covering our bases. BTW, I miss you

Black on the wings = stress bars. It usually occurs on babies when they moult, and can also occur on birds going through a moult or some kind of stressful situation.

Well Jeremy:

We had just done a house move. But really, I have to be honest in the fact I didnt MAKE HER transition to pellets as early as she should have.

It may have been the move or her diet. Either way, just thankful no more black :!:
