Trying to find information on importing birds

Post by Dare2b »

I am looking to get information on importing birds directly from India to add to our breeding program.

Has anyone done this before or know of where I can find the info. I have been trying for days yet must not be asking the right questions because I cant find anything!

We have been mainly searching for affordable mutations ($1250 for 1 bird is not considered affordable).

I will try and find out for you,

The only problem is depending on the country you are in will depend on if you are allowed to import them as IRN's are considered a pest now as to the demage they cause in the wild.

The bird will need to be quarinteened for 30 60 or 90 days again depending on where you are.

then there are frieghting cost and the chance the bird will die in transit.

All of it cost money and it doesnt garentee that you will get a new mutation cheaply or get the bird at all, you are much better of to spend the money within the country you are in
(which is where to help find the details for you?)

Thanks Glenn

Just realized you in Aus!

What mutations are you after?

You may struggle to get a IRN into Aaus from India you might have to import from another country.

Here is the 1st link.
http://www.animaltravel.com.au/International_t.asp

Give them a call and they should be able to advise you and there is a link there to a government site on where you can and cant import from and any requirents you need to meet before you do.

Thanks Glenn

No worries.

Most new mutations are actually happening in Austarlia and not in other countries.

It is also hard for a breeder to prove his mutation is a new proven mutation and not just a combonation of mutations that looks like something new.
So be carefull spending your hard earned.

It is illegall to import any bird into Australia not just Ringnecks. If it could be done you would find that the prices of local birds would drop anyway. The only way to get into the rarer and more expensive (without the large output of your own money) birds is start with the cheaper ones and breed, you may have to sell 10 or 20 of them to buy a rarer bird. Dominant mutations are easier to get into as you only need one coloured bird. With the Recessive mutations you could buy 2 splits which would be cheaper, but not very effective and can take years to build up numbers. Buying 2 year old birds ready to breed will fast track it a bit. The prices do drop pretty quickly unfortunately. Look at Violets $50 000 plus to $400 in 10 years.

The 1st violet was imported into Aus for $40000 18 years ago it was allowed then but not sure now thats why i passed the site details on, i do know we can export birds but i think you need to prove its a pet and not for financial gain.
