Is Polly Pulling?

Post by Jewels »

Hi everyone, any help on this will be very much appreciated, just two days ago I got my very first IRN, I dont think shes been treated very well, maybe not in an abusive way but other small things I have noticed and dont think is right.

When I called for her, the previous owner said she came with her cage, so I didnt bother to buy one, when I got her, she was in nothing more than a small canary/budgie cage, I am now trying like crazy to get her a decent sized cage.

Her nails are way too long, one is missing completly which with the length could have snapped, I am waiting for the vet to open as its the royal wedding weekend and everywhere is closed for another two days.

Her tail always looks wet, and she has some feathers but not as much as she should have, ive noticed there are several full feathers at the bottom of her cage.
Is she pulling them out?

Im not sure what age she is, I was told just a year old. Is there a way to tell her age roughly?
I have done some research and Im not sure which to trust and which not too, there is hundreds of sites offering info and advice but thought this one was more trustworthy.

Whenever anyone goes near the cage, she screams a very shrilling scream which ive read this is a severe warning to stay away. She has come round slightly to me by getting a little closer and not screaming, also showing off a bit when I talk to her on my own when the house is quiet. Some progress at least.

I havent let her out her cage yet as I read its best to let her settle for a few days first, but to be totally honest, Im a bit weary of letting her out incase she attacks, lol. maybe im being silly but still weary, I will let her out, im dying to, when should I let her out her cage for the first time? I do think she has been alowed out by previous owner as when she gets excited when Im alone talking to her, she does try to get out.

Has anyone any advice for a newbie like myself on this matter, I know it all takes time and patience which I have and dont mind waiting till shes ready to interact.

Any info will be very much appreciated and always taken on board. Thank you for reading (I know its been like a book lol)

That is so nice that you got her from that small cage. She will be much happier when you get her the large cage. She is just nervous and has to get used to the new surroundings and to you as well.
Are her wings clipped? Sometimes they moult their feathers when they are stressed. Give her a few days and see how she does.
Good luck.

Hi, thank you for your reply, I did manage to get her a bigger cage, although its not permanent, its much bigger than the one she was in, but not big enough, I dont know if her wings have been clipped, but by the length of her nails I doubt she's even saw a vet let alone have anything done. Im waiting for the vet to open, hopefully tomorrow, and will get done what she's needing. Its just a matter of her trusting us, and like us, it takes time esp if shes been hurt before. Thanks again for your reply. Julie
