flight suit nappies?

Hi all,

I was wondering if any of your birds wear flight nappies, and what your experiance is with them? I was thinking of getting one for my female indian ringneck, Jasper (thought she was a boy but DNA said girl). Anyway, she is 2yrs old, pretty friendly- she always sits on my hands and shoulders on command and i can pat her if shes not moody. She was hand reared and ive had her since 9wks old. However, she still has a moody side to her. I was wondering if she would tolerate a flight nappy..then i can have her out of the cage more often and can take her outside on a leash. I saw a review of the flight nappy on youtube and the bird spent the whole time trying to get it off. Also, im pretty sure jasper will give me some pretty nasty bites if i were to put it on her...

Cheers,

Sarah :)

I have one but have never succeeded in training our birds to wear it.

Ok, thanks. I have a feeling my hands would be bleeding by the end of it haha.
Has anyone toilet trained their bird??

I haven't but I was at a seminar where Barbara Heidenreich explained how to do it.

If my memory is correct, it was something like...
- whilst training this behaviour, decide on the places you would like them to poop
- when they are in that place (eg. their play gym) and you see them poop, say good bird (or whatever you say to reward your bird) and give them a reward
- when you take them out and about, watch them carefully.... when they are about to poop.... put them on the pooping place (eg. their play gym) and let them poop there.... then say good bird and give the reward

Eventually, they will learn that that is where they are supposed to do it.

I can't remember if she also tried to put a command in there or not... doesn't make too much sense to me that you'd want your bird to poop on command.... so maybe there wasn't one.

She made the comment though that her birds will hold it in until they get to a designated pooping place... so if you are going to train this behaviour, you have to be extremely responsible and make sure they get to go to their pooping stations regularly.

Good luck.

The other option is a birdie shawl for you to wear to protect your clothes. See
