how do i tame my ringneck? please help!
i got my bird charlie about four months ago. i dont believe he has ever been handled, his previous owners had him only two months and said they didnt have time for him. well he seems really scared of me when i approach the cage, he will not let me touch him at all. although he maybe isnt quite as bad as when i first got him. when i have let him out of the cage he just sits high uo on the curtain pole and will not return to his cage, i can only get him by chasing him til he is tired then grabbing him with a towel...and getting a bite! this is stressful for both of us and it has put me off letting him out. i do need him t get back in his cage beccause i have a cat and obviously cant leave him unattended. is there any way to train him to come to me maybe to step up? it seems impossible. ive never had a bird before and havent a clue. he is about two years old. i feel so bad for him being stuck in a cage. any ideas would be much appreciated? surely he is used to me after four months.

best thing is to take him and have his wings clipped, as he then cannot fly away and will become more accustomed to being around you "on your level"
Then slowly (when he is in the cage) work on offering him treats through the bars, it may take a while but my aviary male i tamed took things from me after a month or 2.
All in all, once i had my males wings clipped, it took me 6 months to tame him to a point where he hardly nips me, and steps up onto my hand without hestitation, and within 3 months he had picked up talking from my other male.
I also found, after a week or so of wings clipped i would hold my male wrapped in a towel and talk to him for about 10 min twice a day and after a while i could hold him without the towel.

We totally agree with the wing clipping . We were quite reluctant to go down that road as we felt sorry for them , taking their flight away .
But how wrong can you be ? We clipped our birds and left them to settle for a week then started stick training and in the same day had them getting onto our finger and arms , they soon hopped off but its getting better by the day . They are now sitting on our shoulders whilst walking up the stairs BUT as soon as they see their cage or stand they fly off ! We are even able to stroke them for short periods .
Although since clipping their wings they're a bit subdued and not as lively as they were but that will come back in time .
The man in our local exotic bird shop said we would NEVER get anywhere with them as they were from an aviary.......moral of story .....never give up ! Little and often works a treat .
Have a look at our little treasures the day before they had their wings clipped ,IT HAD TO BE DONE .

Good luck
