Hi everyone----I have a Green Ringie that has developed his black ring about 2 weeks ago.Now in the last few days he is getting a blue tinge through his head.Not just faint---really noticeable.Also has really blue tail feathers--- brighter blue than my other Green Ringies
Wondering what this color is or is he just a Green Ringie !!

Hi;

Beautifull bird. He has a lost of psitacine in his back head and thus it appears blue. It seems that he also displays a darker green. This is a feature present in african ringnecks and it has also been described in IRN. Mister Babou has a similar one but with the whole blue head in his photo collection (I have seen it recently but I can not find the web page). This variation has not been described as a new mutation yet, but we will see in the futur. Congratulations for your bird.

If he is normal green then you will get only green offspring.
female offspring is normal green and the male offspring is green /lutino.

Hi Recio,

Thanks Madas, I phoned the breeder from which I bought this breeding pair from and he told me that I will get yellow babies as well because the green is split to give me yellow, is this possible, can someone please explain how this works, or is the breeder lying to me

Yes it is possible. The Lutino mutation is sex linked meaning the hens will be coloured birds and can not be split but the cock birds can be coloured or splits. It sounds like the breeder has sold you a pair with a split cock and lutino hen which will breed Lutinos in both cock and hens

So if your male is split lutino (yellow) then you will in deed get lutino offspring for both sexes. See table below.

Thanks everyone, now this makes a little more sense, just wanted to know if anyone knows of any websites or threads that explain Indian ringnecks genetics and mutations in detail so that I can gain more knowlegde on the subject before I purchase my next breeding pair. Breeding season for us is in 6 months time so I will have to wait and see what colour babies I get to know for sure that the male is a green split. Also how old is a ringneck when it first molts

Hi Madas;
I think the link to Babou 's site is dead. Deon Smith described such a bird in the Yahoo genetics group in 2001, but there was not any pic.
There si a pic of a similar bird in the last part of the IRN mutations in psitaculaworld, showing a deep blue head in an IRN with a yellowish body. It is noted as possible modification or mutation:

Hi Lushen1600, here is a thread where Jay was teaching me and another person how to use the gencal. Might find it a bit helpful. :)

Thanks Pinkdevil, this mutation and genetics stuff is very interesting, where can I find a genetic or mutation calculator online to try a few and also at what age does a baby ringneck first molt

Hi Lewi;

Could you post some more pics of your cock, just to look at his ring? ... and if possible with a normal green male side by side to notice if he displays more melanin than normals do.

Thank you

Recio
