Hello I have my IRN 2 weeks ago. with no leg ring. however i have noticed that most of pet birds do have a ring in their legs.

What are rings for?

Do my bird need one?

My bird Pakshi also has a leg ring.

He came with it from the lady who hand-raised him.

I assumed it was something to do with breeders. Like an ID of the breeder or something?

I would also like to know why they have leg rings. Can you take them off?

xx Vi

Hi guys, you dont need a leg ring,

Breeders use them to identify there birds as an example they get 10 baby blue birds and they get DNA sexed they have the leg ring which usually has a number on it so when the catch it the can look at the number and then there list to see if its a boy or girl, also if they have a good log book they can look at parentage and grand parents to see the genetic make up of there birds, It all comes from pigeon racing the owners have there own leg ring ID's and numbers for when they race them like my pop use to do.

Regarding cutting it off, you can (get a vet to do it) but they have them put on at only 8-10 days of age so you it doesnt normaly annoy them.

Thanks Glenn

LOL!!! how creepy we could have both had a green irn named Pakshi!!!

and we are both from Australia!! Dont tell me ur in QLD??

Good to know that google didnt tell me a fib with the meaning LOL

I was choosing between Pakshi (bird) and Totaa (parrot) - but i figured Pakshi was easier for people to say properly.

I like the name Max - is it short for Maximilian?

its a big help if your baby gets out/escapes or someone steals them. Write down and take a pic if possible of the ring and numbers for id if needed. I have 3 identical blues and it makes it very hard to tell them apart.

Thanks Julie...

@voilet : i thought about MAX coz i m not sure abt sex and later if i found that its female then it can be maxie or maxine otherwise max is fine....there was another indian name "MITHU" one of very common name used for parrots...but i dropped that idea as well.
