Hi! Im new to this website and just recently, one week ago bought my first indian ringneck, Nopalito. When i went to get him the people selling him to me grabbed him out of his cage after he thrashed around and where the feathers should be he started to bleed. They poured hydrogen peroxide on it and said that it would be okay. now a week later he thrased around his cage again and it started to bleed. i think that they didnt know how to clip his wings because it looked horrible. Was it cut too short? Is it where a blood feather used to be? Please help

If it starts bleeding and won't stop, someone told me that cornflour can be used to help clot the blood. That's a first aid technique though, not a replacement to going to an avian vet.

Is he bleeding from a feather or from the skin? It sounds like a broken blood feather, if it is still opening. I imagine it clotted relatively quickly?


You have options here: keep the bird from thrashing around and let it really heal or pull the broken blood feather. Personally, if it clots quickly I tend to use the first option. But a feather that is repeatedly bleeding or won't stop should be pulled.

A vet can always help, of course. If the people you bought the bird from tried to pull a feather but a piece of the shaft is still inside the skin, a vet visit is certainly warranted.

to say again as the others, take him to the vet immediately. and dont go back to that pet shop.

be careful and patient, but you may have a difficult time on your hands, as nopalito may not be hand reared, so taming may take time.
