pin feathers, feather densities

Post by ellieelectrons »

What differences do you notice between the feathers on the blue IRN and the lutino (other than the obvious colour difference)?

I have two IRNs and they are the first two IRNs that I have ever been responsible for. My oldest (Janey) is blue. Janey is just over two. Charlie is a lutino and is just about 1.

Janey seems to have a lot of grey down (I think that's what you'd call it) under her blue feathers... whereas Charlie doesn't. Janey seems to have more feathers than Charlie. When Charlie gets wet it sometimes looks like he has sores on his skin... but I wouldn't call them sores exactly. I don't know how to best describe them... but he's always had them since he was a baby. It may just be the colour of the skin... I'm not sure... I want to know if this is normal or if I should be taking it seriously.

At the moment, he has some spiky looking things coming out of his body, I guess he is getting some pin feathers coming through... but I never notice this with Janey.

Are there known differences between lutinos & blues? Could this be an age thing? Does anybody have any idea what I'm talking about? Has anybody noticed this on their bird?

yep i have noticed that when indie (lutino) is wet he really looks saturated and i can see his skin. When mika (alexandrian) is wet he looks black and I cant see his skin even though he is wetter than indie. My chics are blue and when they are wet I cant see their skin.
Indie looks kinda like he has dandriff, kinda flaky skin but its not actually flaky.
