icon beside your message has a dot on it?

Hi
What does it mean when the icon beside your message has a dot on it? Does it mean you're a newb? If so, how long before it goes away?

Sorry, I didn't describe that right... it's not the message icon that has a dot on it, it is the fourm thread. Some of the threads have a dot on the icon that appears when you list all of the threads (not when you view the messages but the list of threads).
