How do you get birds to take a Bath?

Post by darkcloudchild »

From the time they were babies my birds have NEVER like taking a bath with anything I give them. We've tried the bathtub, sink, a bowl, shower, and a misty spray from a water bottle, and they freak out at all of them. (Now don't freak out, they DO bath in their water dishes, it just drives me crazy!)

Is there any way that we can adapt them to LIKING baths? Just curious, cause I'm at wits end in what to try.

I take it they must be flighted? If not, cage them and spray away. You own them right, because many ringneck owners forget this and are trained the bird owns them. Ringnecks are manipulative that way.

Spray with a mist bottle and when they flutter away, put them back and continue. Spray they water above them as to fall over them. They will love it after a few times. The water should be very warm. Test it on your wrist as you would a baby's bottle. If it is warm there, begin spraying.

If the birds are flighted. Cage them and do as above. Just try to spray so the water falls over them as rain would. My birds love it, but use to hate it too. Now, they open their wings so I can get under there and put their butt in my face so I can get under their tail feather.

A mist bath, once the bird is use to it, is so much fun for the bird and the owner. My birds will not bathe any other way either.

To get them use to it, give them a little spray 3 times a week to adjust. Hand them a twig of spray millet and just mist over them a little, not with the intentions on soaking them. Then, once a week, thereafter with a good soaking but please do this early in the day so they have plenty of time to dry before sunset.
