Hi I was wondering do females have to lay eggs even if there is no males? I have heard of females being egg bound and dying, my girl is two.

Hi Skye

My female lays eggs every year and is making eggs now. She is 8 years old and her behaviour changes heaps at this time of year. Unfortunately they will not be fertilized without a male and last year she layed 5 during the course of a month or so. I always make sure she has heaps of shellgrit and cuttlefish to make sure she stays healthy and to help her eggs be healthy so she doesnt get egg bound. I have never experienced this and hope not too but keep a close eye on her droppings etc.

I hope this helps
Cheers Alison :D

Thanks for that, have rung my vet to get some more info. I had a female regent parrot who was five and recently had to have her put down,She never laid an egg either, the vet didn`t know what was wrong with her, we tried antiobotics over the coarse of a month but she just got worse, I think it was cancer. We have no averian vets near where I live, which make it hard when they get sick. :D
