What is the best mate for Mr. Pickle?
Hi! I still need an answer to the question what will the offspring be from a green split to blue male with a violet or a blue female. I would appreciate any input as I am starting to look for a mate for my boy. He is an aqua color body with green wings, dark turqouise tail and bright green head. I was told he is green split to blue. Thx for any help! Mr. Pickles mom
Re: What is the best mate for Mr. Pickle?
a blue mate will give you 50% green/blue & 50% blue birds ,with a violet mate i am not 100% sure but i think you will get the same results because the violet is a blue series bird and being the green/blue doesn't carry the violet gene you will not get violet offspring but you may get violet green ones not sure on this part
Re: What is the best mate for Mr. Pickle?
hey i was wrong on the violet green/blue with violet it will give you green/blue,blue,violet, & violet-green babies

Re: What is the best mate for Mr. Pickle?
Thx, I think I am going to go for the violet. That is what I was hoping they would turn out to be.
Re: What is the best mate for Mr. Pickle?
that's the best choice and the violet-greens will also be split to blue
Re: What is the best mate for Mr. Pickle?
Hi,
From your description ("He is an aqua color body with green wings, dark turqouise tail and bright green head) Mr Pickle is not green split blue but a turquoise with a heavy expression of the mutation. If he is SF turquoise and you pair him to a violet female (blue SF violet)you could get 25% blue, 25% turquoise, 25% violets and 25% turquoise violets for both sexes.
Hope it helps

Re: What is the best mate for Mr. Pickle?
Thank you for the advice! I have a green hen that had a lutino mother. Not sure if her father was blue or green.She has a light brown wash over her head and chest and wings and a dark turquoise tail with yellow underneath. Next question is what would they produce? I am definitely leaning towards getting a violet in the future. If I wanted blue-violet babies what would be the best combination to achieve this. I really appreciate the great information on this site. It helps so much when planning which birds to add. Thank you for your help!
Re: What is the best mate for Mr. Pickle?
Hi;
It would be great a pic from your female, otherwise we can only speculate
The best pairing for your turquoise male in order to get the highest % of violet chicks is to pair him to a blue-violet DF (double factor) hen. In this case, considering that your male is SF turquoise, you will get 50% turquoise-violet and 50% blue-violets for both sexes; but a blue-violet DF is not easy to find, and if you find it ... it is not easy to afford for it.

Re: What is the best mate for Mr. Pickle?
Thanks again for your very useful information. I think I might breed the 2 I have in the spring unless I have saved enough and can find a violet or blue violet. I can always change the pairings later. I am also adding flight cages so I can separate all the breeding pairs. I have lots of birds but fell in love with the ringnecks and when I add more I want to do the best pairings possible. Both the birds I have are aviary birds but very friendly. They are currently in large cages next to each other and when I get large flights for them I will put them together. I have a large screen porch and will have 6-8 foot long, 6 foot high and 3 foot deep flights for each pair. I really appreciate your advice and it will help a lot when I am planning what to do next. If I do find a violet or blue violet for him I am thinking a Lutino for her. That should avoid all green babies. What do you think?

Hi,
A lutino male paired to a green female will produce lutino females and green males split lutino. This pairing allow you to sex the birds at nest by its colours.
I understand that the mother of the green female is a lutino but it does not mean that the female is split lutino since lutino is a sex-linked mutation and the females can only dysplay the mutation or not (they can not be split or "carriers").
Hope it helps

Re: What is the best mate for Mr. Pickle?
One more question. I have seen green violets. Would the combination with Mr. Pickle produce any violet babies? I am trying to sort this all out before I look for any more birds since I want to breed them with the best possible combinations. We live in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California and even though my birds are sheltered in a screen porch it is cold in the winter. They have plastic sheeting covering their cages and heat panels but I don't start them breeding until April or May. That gives me a lot of time to look for the right birds. I really appreciate your advice. Thank you, Rosemary
Re: What is the best mate for Mr. Pickle?
Hi,
Yes you can get violet babies from your turquoise male but only in case that the male is SF turquoise and the green violet female is split blue. In these conditions and considering the green violet as SF violet (the most usual) you would get:
Males
12.5% 1.0 vert /turquoise bl+/bltq;
12.5% 1.0 vert violet(sf) /turquoise V+/V;bl+/bltq;
12.5% 1.0 bleu bl/bl;
12.5% 1.0 bleu violet(sf) V+/V;bl/bl;
12.5% 1.0 vert /bleu bl+/bl;
12.5% 1.0 vert violet(sf) /bleu V+/V;bl+/bl;
12.5% 1.0 turquoiseBleu bltq/bl;
12.5% 1.0 turquoiseBleu violet(sf) V+/V;bltq/bl;
Females
12.5% 0.1 vert /turquoise bl+/bltq;
12.5% 0.1 vert violet(sf) /turquoise V+/V;bl+/bltq;
12.5% 0.1 bleu bl/bl;
12.5% 0.1 bleu violet(sf) V+/V;bl/bl;
12.5% 0.1 vert /bleu bl+/bl;
12.5% 0.1 vert violet(sf) /bleu V+/V;bl+/bl;
12.5% 0.1 turquoiseBleu bltq/bl;
12.5% 0.1 turquoiseBleu violet(sf) V+/V;bltq/bl;
Thus you can get 12.5% of all your chicks as visual violets (blue violet) for both males and females.

Re: What is the best mate for Mr. Pickle?
Thanks again! This gives me a lot to think about. It is hard to find the violets unless they are babies and that would put off breeding for years. I have seen the green violets infrequently. I do have time to look and will keep trying to find the right match. Then I have to hope that they think it is the right match! I really have fallen in love with these birds and hope to get this together. They are really beautiful and have great personalities. If I ever figure out how to post a picture I will put one on here.

To post a picture just register on www.photobucket.com its a free photo share site.
Once you are there you upload your photo and then if you put your mouse over the picture a little box comes up below it, then one of the options is the direct link that you copy and paste into the area you are trying to get the photo to be in.
Then all the people that want to see your photo do is click on the link.
I cant figure out how to put the picture directly there but its the next best thing.
Good luck Glenn
And where abouts are you? you neverknow somebody may be able to help get you a Violet

I think I figured out how to post a picture! Thank you for your help. I am located in Northern California. I am going to put some aviaries in my screen porch for the ringneck pairs and then I will start looking for the right matches for the birds I have. This should have pictures of Mr. Pickle and Dilly.

Re: What is the best mate for Mr. Pickle?
I have a chance to get a year old hen that is violet green/blue for a reasonable price. I think I might try this. Hopefully this will work out. I wouldn't attempt to breed her until next year as she is still young. Just curious what would be the result with her and the blue cinnamon? I plan to breed her with Mr. Pickle but just wondered about the other.

Wow! Those are some exciting possibilities! I think I will see if I can scrounge up the money and get her. She is not a bad match for my turquoise either if they didn't like each other. Thank you for the information!

Just curious, what would you have to do to get another bird just like Mr. Pickle (turquoise). Is there anything you could breed him to and get that.

You would have to get him a female turquiose.
Then all the babies would look like him.

Re: What is the best mate for Mr. Pickle?
Thx! He really is beautiful and my favorite of all my birds. He is the noisiest and loves attention. My green female, Dilly, is pretty quiet unless I walk past her cage with a blue yardstick. She hates it! I have it by the flight cages because I am measuring space to figure out which walk in flights I am going to get. She scolds loudly if she sees me with it. My blue cinnamon is starting to calm down a bit and get acclimated to us. He was an aviary bird and my birds are in flight cages on the screen porch and we walk by them all the time. I am planning to get the green violet/blue for him and cage them next to each other until they are ready to go into a separate large cage together.

HI what colour would Mr Pickles parents have been? Which colours do you pair to breed turquoise? and violet?

Re: What is the best mate for Mr. Pickle?
I don't know what Mr. Pickles parents were but the girl I got him from thought he was split to blue. I think to get violet you have to have at least one violet. Green violet is the same as SF violet for breeding purposes. My green female was supposed to have a blue father and lutino mother. I may breed her to Mr Pickle as they may come up with some blue and not all green. I wish I knew more of their background for sure.
