hey guys
im just wondering if any of you own or know anything about scaly lorikeets
i might be looking at getting one in spring because my turtle will be going outside into a pond/tank thingie and i would have room for another bird
i would like to know:
how big they get
any special requirments that they have
how loud do they get
what size cage do they need
what are they like as a handraised pet
if it would be ok being in a cage in my bedroom

any help would be terrific

Scalies are a little smaller than rainbow lories.

They have the same mischievous personality of a rainbow.

Their diet is the same as it would be for the rainbow lories and can be quite messy from their 'squirtiness' toilet habits.

They are most active early morning and late evening and really enjoy having a bath.

sounds like they are an Australian bigger version of a conure
and you dont need a licence to keep them anymore

my mutley is a scly breasted lorkeet i think ive posted pics of him hes a total carachtor
i highly recommmend them
last night he kept butting in on a conversation i was having with my son
& every time im mentioned the name of some one he knew (for example my daughter cristy)
he would get verry excited yelling "cristy wheres cristy?"
or what ever name i said
until i got to my friend kingsley (who as the last half of his name is the same as mutley so therfore he refuses to aknowledge it as his name)
then he yelled out his (chosen name for kingsley) "sexy?... wheres sexy?..........
wheres mutleys boy?"
he keeps me on my toes this one i can tell you
he is a very loving active & interactive bird

i will have to wait and see if im aloud to get one though

i dont think i should get one
im getting a lovebird soon, and will be busy trying to tame it and my budgie
plus daily time with my IRN and conure
so im not sure if i would have time to give it all the attention it needs

well i must admit mutley does need alot of attention mind you he gets more than the required time cos he is such a loving & demanding little bird but maybe thats just cos hes spoilt rotten
he also is very jealous of the other birds apart from trivi he doesnt seem to mind her
i agree with you though sheena if your not sure if youve got the time for one your probably right

i will have four birds that need attention plus any babies i have..
and time to look after my other pets properly (turtle, fish, dog, cat)
and maybe handraising some birds
so its best i dont get one just in case!

still an option for another time thou
i still highly reccommend them they are totally georgeous birds
i was actually not looking for another bird when i was claimed by mutley i was toy shopping but the cheeky bugger wouldnt let me go without him
