call me crazy but i will not trade my baby. i rather lose my right arm but my dog and irn are my everything. i figired out how to break him down ( no not physically do don't go ascpa on me) after talking to wendy the lady who wrote the clicker training book. i think i figired out what to do. what i need from people who use special treats for their ringnecks. to tell me what it is and if there are a few i need to know in order. ( this is not every day food but once in a while treat that bird goes nuts for) kinda like american cheeze and my dog he would comit murder if i ask him to for a lil bit of it. thanks and please provide details. sunflower seeds are not an option they are high in fat and since the bird is not fully fighted i can;t give it to him. ciao
thanks

Each bird is different, i guess you have to try a bunch of things till you find one your bird likes. Usually the things they want the most are the things that are bad for them like chips or cheese. But if you only give them a very small amount to break the fear barrier I think it would be ok at first, until you can find something else. My birds hmm they get nuts, apple and corn it is pretty common food for them but they do like it that much to come to me.

Just keep trying things until you find something your bird likes. Every bird is different.

If you dont want to use sunflower then another option is sultanas. sultanas are yuuuumy and because they are small they work good as a training reward.

Personally, I used sunflower for Rajah when he was a baby. In moderation of course!

"the best way to a ringneck's heart is through his tummy" :)

Good luck!

you may have to make something occasional rather than regular, i did this with cooked rice, my birds go nuts over cooked rice they are like kids with lollies (candy) :)

they get all the regular stuff (vege, fruit, pasta, ect) but to them rice is such a specal treat and its pritty good for them as well.

while they were still fairly young i kinda tricked them in to thinking it was the best thing in the world when they did something good they got some rice, its good for a treat cause you can give them just one grain it takes them about 5 seconds to eat and then you can keep going with training or whatever

Our IRNs go absolutely BATS over pear. It's high in sugar though, so moderation.

Sunflower seeds as an occasional treat aren't bad. It's just a diet high in them that causes problems. Mikaela reports that her IRNs get moody though if they have them. While ours are fine but get moody if pellets make up more then 50% fo their diet. It's all in the bird. ^^

Well, if your using the clicker training method by the book you should know that you watch to see what your bird eats first out of its dish, and then remove that as the training treat. You just no longer offer that item as part of the daily diet, only using it as a reward.

One of our Greys is clicker trained. It was kinda fun to do, but when he got bored with it we stopped, we didnt want to teach him "tricks" but stimulate his mind...so he set the limit on what he wanted to learn.
