Bleeding!

Post by kanundra »

So yeah, Bobby's doing great with the training, but this last blood feather every few days or so, drops a bit of blood. It doesn't help that he chews on the end.... everyone else I've spoken too says to leave him he'll deal with it on his own, and that another vet trip might be too much as he will have had three feathers pulled then. (there are others growing out now though, yey!)

So the big question is, a tiny bit of blood... how much is too much?

What do I give him to boost his blood count? I know it's replaced quite quickly and it clots very quick too.

Any thoughts?

I would call your avian vet to discuss options.

My 2 have never bled like that. If they did I would get them to our avian vet. I have heard you can use something to coagulate the blood (I think it was corn flour) but once again I'd discuss that with my vet.

It is possible that this is caused by a disease or other health issue, so I would take him to the avian vet.

Hey,
Ellie beat me to it, but since I've already written this post I'll submit it anyway!

Personally I'd be calling my avian vet, I tend to do that when I am worried about our birds health.
Our vets are good with advice over the phone (the last time we called for advice our question was whether there was any risk to Nele from eating a small wart off myboyfriends finger - I was pretty sure it's fine, but needed that piece of mind!).
It never hurts to call an expert, even if the poor receptionist does start to think you are a bit crazy. Lol! They do prefer people to err to the side of cation, rather than wait until the bird is half dead and dies on examination (not that yours is likely to be that way).

If the bird keeps picking at it, it won't get to heal.

I think a birds total volume of blood is about the same as 10 % of their body weight. So a bird weighing 120g has about 12ml.

Claire

I agree with Ellie and Claire...call your vet and ask for assistance. It sounds like he's forming a picking habit. You want to stop that quickly. You can use corn starch to stop the bleeding, but it's not a cure for the condition. Hope your birds feels better soon :)
I am owned by my birds...and I wouldn't have it any other way :D

Having chatted to our CAG's vet today it seems that sometimes they do just knock them and with the blood feathers acting like a straw even if it's well clotted it will always lose some blood with a knock or flight.

I've seen some blood on him tonight, trying not to freak out, but he's going in asap to get it pulled.

He won't like it, it will hurt and he'll sulk. But better than him getting weaker and not feeling well.

Will let you know how it goes, bless him. He's been really good today, taking treats and hoping on me for clicker training.

Feeling sorry for him, but needs must.
