should i be worried about this becoming a health problem?

Post by Fidgit_Green »

hello again everyone.

now i have never had this become an issue before, but just now tonight i noticed that Fidgit, when chewing on a couple tiny bits of plastic that he broke off one of his toys swallowed one little bit then picked up the other bit, chewed a little them swallowed that piece to.

obviously i got up right then and took away anything that he could break pieces off.

up until now it has never been an issue, he has always just chewed stuff up and spat it out (unless it is actually food).

so will he actually digest the little bits of plastic? they were very small, like a little crumb of bread, maybe about the size of 1/4 of a grain of rice.

i am just worried that he wont be able to digest them and they will stay stuck in his system.

any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Fidgit Green...mass murderer of plastic lol

Seriously though, when it comes to plastic, I usually take away toys that Skye can break down that small. I try to use heavy thicker plastic. I'm not sure if it would hurt his digestion. Check his poop to make sure he is pooping and doesn't have any obstructions. Check for odd coloring or very watery. One or two watery poops is ok, but if its consistent I would get to your vet. Make sure he is still eating and drinking well. I imagine IRN's in the wild eat things they aren't supposed to once in awhile.

Is a parrot likely to swallow a big thing? I mean, a dog, sure, eat an entire sock in one swallow, but don't birds carefully manipulate and whittle down their food?

thanks guys.

ill make sure to keep a close eye on him over the next couple of days to be sure that
what he has eaten isnt causing him any problems.
it just worried me because he chews on anything he can, and as much as i keep a very close eye
on him i can only assume that there are a few times that i dont notice him swallowing something that he shouldnt.

i have done something i should have done months ago.
i need to sort out where the closest avian vet is in my area, so i have it sorted for when i need it in a hurry.
and i have taken away anything that he can take bit off that he might eat.

thanks for your replies.

I recently read a story about an IRN swallowing an earring, so I don't know that they are always careful. Skye will sometimes swallow a piece of chicken whole. I have an extreme chewer like Fidgit so I know what you're going through :)
