My Indian Ringneck is hurt

Post by amazhar »

I have a problem and can't find any solution for it online

I have a 4 months old Indian ringneck. One day I came home and he is standing on one feet which could be normal for parrots but what I found no normal is the he had a very weak grip in his right foot. It is kind of read and some of the fingers are kind of loose. Tried researching and couldn't find anything. No avian vets are available where I live so I can't do anything about it. I started putting cream on his feet, antibiotic and another one for sprained legs and stuff like that. I only started doing that yesterday night. He walks around his cage and shows no signs of discomfort but he tries not to use his right leg as much as possible. any idea what I should do?

I saw some kind of a cut behind his finger, it is not deep but I am thinking that this might be what is causing the problem.

Hi. I am not a vet and cannot say if my advice to follow will truly aid or further damage your pet. However, I did have a canary with some foot trouble, and he was helped by this treatment.

I soaked the foot in warm (not hot) water for a few short minutes. I washed the foot with antibacterial soap and warm (not hot) water. I dried the foot as best I could with a clean paper towel and applied Bactroban ointment. I placed the bird in a freshly cleaned cage with fresh newspapers and changed the papers throughout the day as soon as I saw he had messed on them. I did this twice a day. The foot was helped.

Now, if your bird doesn't have newspaper in the cage already I would not add it. Just wipe the bars and perches well with alcohol, or wash them also with antibacterial soap. Rinse well. Canaries get paper on the bottom of the cage usually; that is why he had to have clean paper. Just do what you have to do to keep the bird's environment clean because you can't keep a BandAid on a bird's foot.

Another thing I have to suggest, and I believe this is quite important, is that if your bird's foot is infected (and it sounds like it is!) and it does not get better VERY quickly, you MUST take the bird to a vet for help. This is because a foot infection can spread through the bird and KILL it. It is not the same as if you or I had a cut on our toe that was slow to heal. SO, if the bird's foot does not mend up in a few days, call around to vets in your area and find one who will be willing to see your bird. Ask them if they will do some research or consult with other vets to help your bird. You will need the vet to prescribe medicine.

Also, it would be a good idea to start calling around for a vet right now. That way, once you decide to take the bird in, you won't have to wait until you find a vet - you'll already have one. Also, you might have a pressing emergency later, and sooner or later, you will need a vet.

Best of luck!

My birds already has new paper and I do try to clean it regularly.

I also tried putting some Topical antibiotic as I have been advised by one expert online.

The problem is that avian vets are not very popular where I live. but I will try to get in contact with one.

Thank you very much

The bird lives in a big cage. HE is let freely for 4 or 5 hours a day. His wings are clipped but the guy I bought the bird from has clipped it a bit too much so he lands heavily on the floor. I try as much as possible minimize his falls but sometimes he just gets scared and falls. No he hasn't pulled a muscle but he may have fell a bit hard when I was not home. I will try to take a picture of it. The bird goes around the cage and is active. He eats well too. I will try to get a newer cage and a wider one tho.
