Adopting a ringneck?
All ive ever owned is a parakeet. Do ringnecks scream...what do i need to know about this breed? I do not want one that is flying around, so wing clipping is important to me. What is the best way to enjoy a ringneck? I have read they are not cuddlers, but i love watching the youtubes of Bowie. How much attention do they need every day, can you leave them over night? Thank you for answering my questions. I have been reading conflicting information online, so would like to get more info.

Hello.
I have been an IRN owner for 4 months.
IRN's do scream loud when they're bored but you get to like it in the house because when you get used to it you think its not so loud after all. They don't scream all the time. However, I don't think much of wing clipping. Wing clipping could or may damage their wings and also not just that, I guess they don't like staying in cage forever and not being let out for once. A girls IRN died from not being let out for 5 years and it kind of drived mental. Also IRN's seem to be much agressive. Female IRN's are less agressive.
If you have anymore questions please ask me.
Kind Regards

Hi and welcome, they are not that loud, and if you keep them happy they hardly ever scream and make soooo cute noises and learn to talk as well. True you can't keep them in a cage all the time. They need to come out of the cage daily for a certain amount of time. When I got Kiwi his wings were clipped but now its growing nicely and I won't be clipping again.

That sums it up perfectly!Little Buttercup wrote:Hi and welcome, they are not that loud, and if you keep them happy they hardly ever scream and make soooo cute noises and learn to talk as well.

What you put in to your bird is what you get back.
Our neighbour (2 houses away) has a ringneck that makes its contact call half the day and night. When we asked them about it they said it was handraised when they got it, and after a year of very little handling and attention it bites and screeches.
Our bird is 8 months old and the complete opposite, but he does a loud contact call when he wants us, mostly he makes cute noises and practises talking. If we want to leave him in the cage when we are home we have found giving him some foraging toys keeps him quiet.
The breeder we got our bird from told us to socialise him and handle him heaps for the first six months and that was the best advice ever. He is so comfortable with people that he even fell asleep on the vets hand after having an examination and bloodtest.
I think the best way to enjoy a ringneck is constantly! I love racing our one around the living room, he flies so fast that he always wins though. He is always doing something cute and making us laugh!
We have never clipped his wings, and our house has way more powercords and dangerous stuff at floor level so its great that he almost never goes there. There are lots of good health reasons to let pet birds fly that could be worth researching.
We cover his cage at around 8 every night and don't hear a peep out of him until 7:30am.
I don't know how much time they need from you a day, but if you work all day I would recommend something to keep their minds active like foraging toys.
I'm a Bowie fan also, his person obviously has a lot of time for him.
I hope that helps.
I think ringnecks are great pets!

Hi Claire,
So true what you are saying about them. When I bought my first ringneck, a tame one at 3 months old, I was also told to handle her lots and socialize her. She was a darling bird. Actually my cockatiel makes more noise then Kiwi my ringneck. I cover the cages at 6.30 and open up at 7.30 and true like you say not a peep from Kiwi do I get. If i'm a few minutes late Coco would be the one to remind me to open up
Kiwi also likes to do practice talking.
