Hello New IRN Owner - What next?

Post by localbird »

Hi All,

We are from the UK and after many hours of research and careful consideration we have now purchased a grey IRN to join our family, he/she is approx 8 months old and has been housed as an aviary bird in a garden centre until now.

We let him (I keep saying he but not sure yet) out for the first time this week and it was an utter disaster, he spent the whole time on top of the curtain rails and would not go 'home' to his cage, after many frustrating hours hubby had to catch him manually and he was bitten quite aggressively, we haven't let him out since.

He does not want to be near us and will go to the back of the cage of we put our hands near him no matter how gently but he loves to be spoken to and comes to the front to sit by us when we ignore him, when we leave the room he is vocal until we return so I sense that he likes our company but doesn't trust us.

I don't want to cage him or clip him but I can't see that trust evolving if we have to manually get him into his cage every time.

Can anyone tell me how best to proceed both in terms of letting him out and taming him enough to get him to step onto us and accept food from us? Any advice will be gratefully received as I want him to become a part of a loving family and help us to teach the children responsible pet care.

Many thanks
