IRN in Hawaii

Hello all. Just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Melissa. I live in the Aloha state of Hawaii. I am relatively new to owning an IRN, but not to owning birds. I have an 11 month old blue IRN that I just adopted about two weeks ago. I have no clue whether its a boy or a girl. I think I see a ring forming, but he/she hasn't started the 1 year molt yet so I don't know. Doesn't matter really to me what does matter is that he/she is super affectionate with me. I get kisses and cuddles all the time. No words yet, but im working on it. The previous owner only whistled at the bird. I also have a 1 year old Sunday conure. She is sassy, spunky, and totally jealous of any attention I give to anyone else but her (including humans) I have a 6 month old GCC that I recently rescued from a bad pet shop experience. She was so timid and scared when I brought her home, but she's coming along nicely. Actually the GCC and my IRN have formed some kind of bond. It's so cute to watch my IRN preen my GCC. And last but definitely not least is my year old cockatiel. He is my entertainer. He sings and chatters and whistles ALL day long. I taught him the Popeye theme song, the Andy Griffith theme song, how to wolf whistle, and he also whistles for my dog. He says hello and makes kissy noises. All in all, I have a very rascally bunch. And I wouldn't trade them for anything.

I hope to meet people here who can offer advice and words of wisdom on the care and training of my IRN. I look forward to speaking with all of you

Welcome Melissa, sounds like a nice bunch you got there. Lots of things you will learn here. Me too just learning. How did you get your cockatiel to sing songs? I really would like mine to sing. He can say a few words. So nice of you to rescue the GCC. Good job

I converted my breakfast nook into my bird room. So it's right off the kitchen and living room (open floor plan). For weeks I would whistle the Popeye theme song over and over again. He eventually picked it up. After the first song, the second song was easier. I found the andy griffith theme song on my ipad and placed it close to his cage. For about 15 minutes a day i would play it on a loop. Only took about two weeks. Is your cockatiel a male? I've been told only the males will whistle. Hope you can teach yours how to whistle. Mine keeps me very entertained

Hi Melissa,

My bird room is also just next to my kitchen with a glass door in between. I think my cockatiel is a male but not sure. He does say words and I heard female cockatiels do not talk, so I just take him to be male. I will try and play the songs for him. Thanks
