New owner of a Indian ringneck

Post by lola13 »

Hello all,
I've had my little girl Lola for over a couple of weeks now. Shes only 6 months old. She's still very shy and runs away from anyone that comes near her. I don't think she has had any human contact. She's on a lovely diet of seeds, fruit and veg though she's only liking apples and seeds but I'm not giving up on her. And she's in love with her mirror!

I've read up on the taming topics but I'm still a little lost on how to start taming her. She's started to tweet in front of me but whenever I go up to her she breathes in heavy and makes a sound like a hiss but not. And tries to get as high as possible she's been out of the cage twice and every time I've had to catch her by putting a towel over her scooping her up and putting her back.

Will I ever be able to tame her?

Hi lola13, Welcome and wishing you lots of luck with your ringneck. I'm sure you will be able to tame her at least to a certain degree. She is still young, 6 mnts. Just train everyday for a few minutes. My Kiwi, I don't how old he is but he is an adult already and seems like he was aviary raised, but not so sure. He was very scared and wild when I got him, didn't even want me in the room and would start screaming and banging against the cage when I come in and change food bowls. After leaving him for 1 week to settle down I started training using the clicker. Very soon he realised I won't go out of the room until he stop screaming. So he started making a cute sound then I would immediately drop a treat in his bowl and leave the room. After a few sessions like that he stopped the screaming and actually looked forward to my coming in and would actually make his cute sound to call me in so he could get his treat. But he still scared of my hand now and I still drop his treat in a bowl and he would quickly come to fetch it. Any way he is progressing and improved quite alot since I got him. And I have him for only 4 months now.

I let him out of the cage every morning for a few hours then he gets to play on his playtree too. At first I also had to towel him but only 3 times and then he realised if I tell him to go in and he goes he won't be towelled again. So I tell him to 'go home' and he goes in I click and treat him. So I dont' have a problem getting him in the cage when I want him to go. Only use the towel if really necessary otherwise don't. Its not a good idea. Keep on trying with the veg, soon she will take a liking to it. She might get tired of the apple and want something else. I have noticed with my Kiwi, that he loves to eat something then after a few days it seem like he don't like it anymore.
Don't give up on her, let her out of the cage daily and let her go in again without towelling her and she will soon know to go. Don't forget to treat her when she goes in.

Good luck lola

Thanks, Missk! But I still got a lot to learn. Got very little time on my hands for my babies. At the moment i'm not training everyday but from tomorrow I will set another routine that I can follow hopefully, and spend some time on training daily.

Hey,
Thanks for the replies!
I've heard of the clicker training and seen a few YouTube videos on it. I might have a good look into it.
I've been doing what someone wrote in the behaviour forums and she's started to do more things like eatting, singing and sleeping in front of me. But I don't think she's getting enough sleep I put a sheet over her whenever I hear her grinding her teeth and closing her eyes normally around 7-9pm. She's getting 10+ hours of sleep a day but in the morning shell have her mad hour playing and eating and then goes back to sleep. She doesn't look I'll and she's eating and eating her treats. She must stay up late after I go to bed!

I'll keep you all posted!
