IRN biter Question

Post by Kelly »

Hi, I just added the list to get some help. I know someone who wants to place a 7 mo old IRN because it bites. It has never really been out of its cage. I think it is a female. I am looking into adoping her. She is friendly and wants some attention. Is it possible to rehab her at this point??? I got some info from a avian vet on how to food train her. I have had a conure in the past so I am not unfamiliar with birds. I need some sound advice here because I have already fallen prey to her charms.

Hi Kelly, welcome to the forum.

One you have already fallen prey to her charms (we all know about this)

Two you have experience with birds prior

Three Jen is everyones inspiration on how great persistence and wonderful patience can have even the meanest of birds step up and give you kisses.

If you are prepared for a few bites and alot of time put into this with a good chance of having a wonderful bird to love - or - on the other hand the possiblity that you may actually fail and have a biter on your hands for the next 30 years. I would say yes.

Remember ,, even if you can tame this bird,, you will need to give it attention "every" day to keep it tame.

Just my 2 bobs worth

Good Luck !

Any bird can be rehabed but you will have to spend alota time with it exclude it from other birds this allways help so that it will get used to human company and allways be on the birds beck and call lol the game is pateince and waiting but you will reap rewards

hi kelly, i also have fallen for a irn, also a biter although mine is young i must say that you need to spend time at least 15 mins of 1 on 1 time every morning and night just showing them that you want there love and never get agresive with them i have found that the best and the one plan that worked for me was to get taller then jedi when i wanted him to step up and never move my hand away when he tryed to nip and kept repeating in a firm voice to step up and when he did hold him lower then my sholders and make him step up at least 3 times. i now have a beautiful bird that steps up every time (we are still working on the patting on the back thing but with time it will come ) you need to earn there trust i also have a sun conure and it worked for his biting as well:D good luck

I would love to work on kai's petting. I can have him step up anytime, I can kiss him on his chest, do just about anything, he never flinches when I move my arms about anymore, but I can't ever get a hand around behind him. NO way!!! .. any suggestions on how to go about that would be greatly appreciated :D
