My IRN is happy but not when i'm around!
My IRN is the best bird I have had in my life. He whistles and plays with his toys out of his cage, but when I go near him he freaks out. HE even accepts apples from my fingers sometimes. But still he prefers to stay near my other bird ( a Budgie).

I dont know what to say but i suck at owning a bird. www.b-boyphat.piczo.com
Phat,
Welcome to our board! And you do NOT suck at owning a bird! Don't say that!! These are just moody, pain in the butt at times birds! They have THEIR MIND and nothing you do can change it! Don't feel that way about yourself. Believe me, I have two irns and one is a doll and the other would rather RIP my fingers off than look at me. And I've had him for months now and he won't take ANYTHING from my hand. He sees my hand and he splits! If we come near his cage he tries desperately to get inside before we can get close. I've been told it takes a very long time to tame these beasts! Just be patient and it'll be ok. Post often and ask bunches of questions! We're here for you and we can help.

Hi all,
Jen i have read through your posts regarding Byndi and my Ringo is the same although i cannot get near him to train him to step up.... if i get too close he is gone....when i give him his treats off my hand i would also like to try and tickle him but he grabs the treat and runs... do not get chance to touch him.
Another question, Ringo has 3 mirrors in his cage which he loves to look in, but have been told today that he will not learn to speak if i keep them in there...any advice????

Hey Michelle,
You're one step ahead of me, my Byndi won't take anything from my hand. He does not like hands at all. When we have him step up (mind you this is after he has taken off from his cage top or playstand cuz we're near him and he doesn't want that) we have to keep our hand in a fist and he runs straight up my arm to my shoulder. NO HANDS FOR BYNDI! But I've been told with mirrors the bird bonds with the bird in the mirror and has no use for us. I don't know if that's true or not. But I don't put any mirrors in any of my babies cages for that very reason. I also don't know if it's true on the speaking thing. But good luck and keep us posted.

I'm back! I noticed that Michelle has the same problem as I do, but I don't think I got an answer to my question. I have been told that I should spend more time with my bird but he keeps hiding behind the budgie cage when i'm near him. I love my bird but why cant he realize that!!! even for 6.5 months since I got him!!!:(

Hiya Phat and welcome to our family.. For our benefit in assisting you .. please give us a little more info on your bird. Eg. how old , do you know if its male or female, how did you come by your bird (eg. breeder, pet shop, rescue, adopt ?) and what things have you already tried. When he freaks out with you , what exactly does s/he do ?
Hope to be able to help in some way once we know a little more. There are so many different tactics depending on the bird and its history.
And what is the name of you're beautiful fid
Cheers !
