Well, my good luck may be over

Post by mattcoffs »

Sammy's total attitude has changed over the last few weeks...

I'm thinking maybe now she's getting older she's acting a little differently?

She's now an absolute chewing monster! She used to love sitting with me quietly, but now she's more interested in undertaking chewing expeditions throughout my house!

Also, i think i may have spoiled her a little too much as a baby bird - because as soon as i leave the room and she can't see me she whistles and whistles (and occasionally shrieks) until i return, or ignore her long enough!

And to think i'd started to think i had the hang of this parrot ownership thing...

Try not to worry. Keep being patient with her and you'll get through it. Your relationship with her will continue to evolve throughout the rest of her life.

Depending on how bad she is, you may have to closely supervise times out of the cage. With my recent problems (Janey's infatuation with the electrical appliances in the laundry), I've resorted to taking them directly into a back bedroom of the house when they are out of the cage. I close the door and I interact with them in there. It is a bit restrictive but it's preferable to confining them to their cage 24/7 (which I'd never do).

You could also work on having several perching stations around your house and offer her rewards when she sits in the right places. If you have any birdie gyms, you could try offering plenty of small untreated wood treats or clean paddle pop sticks for her to chew.

Best wishes. Please let us know if there is something specific you'd like assistance with.

Ellie.

Just remember to try not to respond to her whistling or shrieking for attention when u leave the room or this could lead to a terrible screeching problem. When u leave the room and she starts calling to u, wait until she stops for a couple minutes and then come in and perhaps give her a reward and a pat, tell her she's a good girl, Etc. To stop her thinking that all she has to do to get ur attention is make enough noise for long enough.
