Teaching Alan to talk...

Post by sean080181 »

Hi, we are looking at teaching Alan some new words, we have tried saying new ones but he seems to like the ones he already knows! Does anyone have any tips on how to introduce new words?

Thanks :)

When I got my ringneck he already knew how to talk, but I wanted him to learn "my words" I just talk to him constantly about the same things every day and sometime switch it up so he doesn't get board. He started saying the new things when I was out of the room first. Then he started saying them to me.
Example: When we got him he would say "pretty bird" I felt that was very generic, so I started telling him everyday "your so pretty" At first he would say "Pretty your so, your so" LOL! Now he has it down! He says when he gets on his talking role "YOUR soo Pretty!!" in his sing so voice.
You just have to make the words you use sound fun and talk to him everyday using those words.

Your welcome! Just keep it up. Before you know it he will be saying all you are trying to teach him and more... Just talk to him Alot. Rosco knows atleast 30 words and atleast that many sounds. My two year old son makes car noises when he runs, so now when Rosco sees him run he makes the sound and does the horn beep with him. lol! He calls the dogs and tells them to go to bed when they come in at night. He was talking before we got him and he has learned so much more new that he rarely says what he started out saying.

very cute and nice to know he knows so many words, how old is he ?
my alexandrine is only 9 months old, he calls my daughters name by whistling and in voice also , says how are you and hello (talk) - but the prob is that he "talks" if you can call that talking only when i hold him and rub his head -actually he hates to be petted and i love petting - so when i rub him back or head he starts talking - otherwise its only whistling talk .. is this common or a rare case ?

Mine is 4 years old. Because he is so young he may not feel comfortable about talking in front of you. My mom used to have Caiques that would only talk when no one was in the room. Rosco talks all day and repeats things we say. He likes to play a game where he whistles something and we whistle it back. If we whistle it wrong he makes a weird sound and does the same whistle again until we get it right. lol. We have played that for hours, at times my mouth gets sore from whistling so much.
I don't know if the talking when head rubbing is common because he will not let us pet him, never has. He is in a weird stage right now where he wont be held, but before he was held and wanted to be where ever I was. I am really hoping its hormonal and he will get over it sometime soon.
There is a youtube video of a IRN that only talks when his head is rubbed though. I just say keep letting him know he is loved make talking fun and keep working with him and don't give up.

thank you ash, mine is okay with coming onto my finger anytime, he goes to anyone from my finger when i put him there ( he doesnt go to anyone directly or willingly so i lift him and transfer to my daughter who loves that tingling feeling when his claws scratch). thankfully he is not averse to coming over otherwise i would be heartbroken, i chose a parrot compared to other birds becos of their interaction and intelligence. Hope you tide over the present condition and he comes over to you asap. I had posted a query on screaming and whistling loud , could you please have a look at it and offer some advice ? since you have been with the bird for 4 years this might have been a common occurence for you and your advice /tips can help - thank you

When Janey talks it has a bit more of a whistling quality about it than a talking quality. Other people can't really make out what she's saying but they can tell she's saying something.

Charlie talks more clearly but it's also not really easy to understand.
