still backing away

Post by wolfeey152 »

ive had sonic for 3 days now and we seem to have a bit of a bond going at the moment he will take treats from my hand even while its in the cage and he will let me scratch him all over even under his wings and hasnt bitten me once on purpose (touches wood) i even trust him enough to let him out of his cage and he will sit on my shoulder even but his favourite spot is on my computer monitor but he just wont step up at all and still moves away when hes out of his cage is there any tips on helping to learn to step up ? and any tips on improving trust to help with the moving away ???

Firstly, well done. Sounds like you are doing well.

This is possibly the best resource I've found on stepping up:

Do you have a T-perch or gym for your bird to use? This is the best thing to use when training a bird to step up.

Just keep building the trust - keep offering the rewards and you'll get there.

I think this thread could help regarding safe woods, etc.

Also, I found a good list once when I did a google search - so you can also try that.

I once read that the Australian native bottlebrush tree is good for birds.

Natural tree branches are definitely the best for T-perches, however you can also use non-treated dowel (the same dowel they use on store bought cages) that you can buy cheaply at a hardware store.

Good luck!
