how to train to not bite?

Post by amw78 »

Hi, I bought my IRN a few weeks ago. She is now 2 months. I say she but who knows. lol. We named her Bobbers because of all the head bobbing wanting to be fed. she was hand raised and we love her like crazy. she is very friendly and not afraid to go to anybody. she loves people. she has a thing for ears and will bite them. hard. not all the time though and i dont think she is doing it to be mean. she has also started to bite hard when she is on someone and she doesnt want to get off and you put your hand up to let her step up. i have been having to make her fly off of someone to get her off them. usually its because she has bitten their ear. i dont want her to be aggressive but the kids are getting leary of her because of the biting. i know my story is long but some background helps i guess. i know she is just a baby and has to learn, what can i do? thanks for any help that you give me.

It is not impossible to stop them from biting however, it can be difficult. My two still bite on the odd occasion but it is reasonably rare now.

Is ear biting the only problem biting?

The first step to solving the problem is to try to figure out what the triggers for the biting are. My Charlie will bite my ear when he is bored whereas my Janey will bit ears when she gets over-excited, scared or anxious. We've worked out that the triggers for her biting are: people she doesn't know in the house and (oddly) manchester (sheets, towels, etc.)

For Janey we try to fix the problem by not allowing her onto our shoulder... which I'd say we're successful with 80% of the time... she still manages to jump on our shoulder sometimes. If she is on my shoulder I try to lure her off onto her gym using food as soon as I can. I also now avoid manchester when she is on my shoulder.

With Charlie, he doesn't bite too hard, so I don't worry too much about him on the shoulder.

Best wishes.

Ellie.
